17_July_2014: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the World Bank report that illegal wildlife trade has taken a major toll on the world's threatened species. Globally, illegal wildlife trade is estimated to be a multi-billion per year industry and the fourth largest illegal trade after drugs, humans and weapons. The difference, highlighted by the finance institutions, is that global illegal wildlife trade involves a finite and rapidly diminishing amount of resources. continued...

10_July_2014: The third meeting of the Arctic Council's Task Force on Arctic Marine Oil Pollution Prevention (TFOPP) continued developing an ‘Arctic Council Action Plan for Oil Pollution Prevention' and related cooperative arrangements. The TFOPP, which convened in Ottawa, Canada, on 12-13 June, was co-chaired by the Russian Federation and Norway, and is expected to present the outcomes of its work and any recommendations for further action at the Arctic Council Ministerial meeting in 2015. continued...

July_2014: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has released the report of the Ad hoc Technical Expert Group (AHTEG) on Risk Assessment and Risk Management under the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. Among other recommendations, the group recommends that the seventh Meeting of the Conference of the Parties serving as Meeting of the Parties to the Protocol (COP-MOP 7) endorse the Guidance on Risk Assessment of Living Modified Organisms (LMOs). continued...
