Event: 7th International Conference on Ballast Water Management (ICBWM2014) [viewed]

The Seventh International Conference on Ballast Water Management will address the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments (2004). The Convention has been ratified by 40 countries and is expected to come into force within the next two years. The Convention aims to decrease the rate of bio-invasions that result from shipping. The conference offers an opportunity for sharing experiences and solutions on the implementation of the Convention. It will also include a field trip to Singapore's Ballast Water Centre Facility and other sites. The Global Environment Facility (GEF), UN Development Programme (UNDP), GloBallast Partnerships Programme and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) are organizing the meeting.

Event: Fifth IPSI Global Conference (IPSI-5) [viewed]

The Fifth International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative (IPSI) Global Conference (IPSI-5) will be held from 4-5 October 2014 in Pyeongchang, Republic of Korea. The conference will be held back-to-back with the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 12) as a chance for many IPSI members and non-members alike to discuss ways to collaborate and promote the principles of the Satoyama Initiative and its role in sustainable development and biodiversity. IPSI-5 is co-organized by the Ministry of Environment, the Republic of Korea, and the IPSI Secretariat, hosted by the UN University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS). The Assembly on 5 October is open only to IPSI members. The Public Forum from 9:00 to 13:00 on 4 October is open to the general public, with the theme 'Furthering action in production landscapes and seascapes for sustainable development,' and featuring presentations from a number of experts working in capacity building and supporting livelihoods for sustainable development. Please note that attendees must be registered for CBD COP 12 in order to have access to the conference venues.

UNGA General Debate 2014 Addresses Oceans, Wildlife, Protected Areas [viewed]

unga6930 September 2014: During the UN General Assembly (UNGA) General Debate, many speakers highlighted their priorities for the post-2015 development agenda and discussed global challenges, including international security, terrorism and Ebola. At the same time, several countries stressed the importance of environmental sustainability and shared their visions and achievements on biodiversity, including oceans, wildlife, forests and protected areas (PAs).

Event: Global Soil Biodiversity Conference [viewed]

The first Global Soil Biodiversity Conference will be organized by the Global Soil Biodiversity Initiative (GSBI) and EcoFINDERS, from 2-5 December in Dijon, France. Held under the theme 'Assessing Soil Biodiversity and Its Role for Ecosystem Services,' this first GSBI conference will summarize the current state of knowledge and recent achievements in the science of soil biodiversity. The goals of the conference will be to promote scientific research on the role of soil biodiversity for ecosystem functions and services, and integrate such understanding into environmental agendas, sustainable policies and land management decisions globally. Topics to be addressed include: discovery and observation; tracking and monitoring; assessing pressures and threats; strategies for management and conversation; soil ecology education; and global harmonization of methods for structural and functional diversity of soil organisms.

UNGA General Debate 2014 Continues Focus on MDGs, Post-2015 Agenda, SIDS [viewed]

unga6929 September 2014: As the 69th UN General Assembly's (UNGA) General Debate entered its second week, speakers continued to reflect on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and outline their priorities for the post-2015 development agenda, including gender equality and women's empowerment, peace and security, and oceans. Small island developing States (SIDS) and landlocked developing countries (LLDCs) highlighted particular challenges and vulnerabilities, with some also addressing the challenge of graduation from least developed country (LDC) status.

Urgency of Healthy Oceans Stressed by Experts, Officials [viewed]

Oceans Events Support Ocean Management, Stress Enforcement [viewed]

Event: Second Session of the Team of Technical and Legal Experts on ABS (TTLE ABS-2) of the CGRFA [viewed]

At its second session, the Team of Technical and Legal Experts on Access and Benefit-sharing (ABS) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA) will continue work on draft elements to facilitate the domestic implementation of ABS for different sub-sectors of genetic resources for food and agriculture.

Event: Eighth Session of the ITWG on AnGR of the CGRFA [viewed]

At its eighth session, the Intergovernmental Technical Working Group (ITWG) on Animal Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (AnGR) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA) will address, among other issues, the preparation of the second report on the state of the world's animal genetic resources for food and agriculture, and the implementation and update of the Global Plan of Action for Animal Genetic Resources.
