IPBES-3 Opens with Discussions on Work Programme [viewed]

ipbes12 January 2015: The third session of the Plenary of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES-3) opened on 12 January 2015, in Bonn, Germany. Delegates heard opening statements from dignitaries, regional groups and multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) and discussed: organizational matters; membership of the Platform; credentials; and reports from the IPBES Executive Secretary Anne Larigauderie and Multidisciplinary Expert Panel (MEP) members on implementing the work programme 2014–2018.

Event: Africa Environment Day/Wangari Maathai Day [viewed]

Africa Environment Day, celebrated annually on 3 March, was established by the Organization of African Unity in 2002 as a way of raising awareness of the pressing environmental challenges facing the continent. Since 2012, the Africa Environment Day has been celebrated in conjunction with Wangari Maathai Day, in order to pay tribute to the late Nobel Laureate's green legacy.

ICLEI-CBC Releases Report on Biodiversity Summit 2014 [viewed]

iclei-cbc6 January 2015: Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI) - Cities Biodiversity Center (CBC) released the report of the 2014 Cities and Subnational Governments Biodiversity Summit. The Summit was held in Pyeongchang, Republic of Korea, in parallel to the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 12).

Event: International Day for Biological Diversity 2015 [viewed]

The UN proclaimed 22 May the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. The theme for the 2015 Day will be 'Biodiversity for Sustainable Development' to reflect the importance of efforts made to establish a set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of the UN post-2015 development agenda for the period of 2015-2030 and the relevance of biodiversity for the achievement of sustainable development. The selection of the theme also underlines the adoption of the Gangwon Declaration at the High-level Segment of the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

Event: Les Assises du Vivant 2015: Biodiversity and Climate Change in Interaction [viewed]

This 2015 edition of the Les Assises du Vivant dialogues of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will bring together scientists, civil society and other stakeholders to discuss the links between biodiversity and climate change in the run-up to the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The event, titled 'Biodiversity and Climate Change in Interaction: Creating new life possibilities,' will focus on three themes, namely: rethinking conservation - towards 'no regrets' strategies; developing ecological solidarity and environmental justice by 'teaming up' with the rest of the living world; and doing business differently by articulating performance and resilience.

Event: Asia Regional Capacity-building Workshop on Mainstreaming Biosafety into National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans and Resource Mobilization [viewed]

Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), this workshop aims to enhance the capacity of Asian Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety to implement the Nagoya – Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress by effectively integrating biosafety into National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and national development plans. The second objective of the workshop is to build Parties' capacity to identify and mobilize resources for implementation and identify opportunities and means to foster regional cooperation.

Event: Global Conference on a Transformative Agenda for Official Statistics [viewed]

This conference, jointly organized by the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) and the Statistical Office of the European Communities (EUROSTAT), seeks to respond to the increased demand for detailed and timely data to monitor progress on the post-2015 development agenda goals and targets. The conference will discuss, inter alia: the innovations in data collection, dissemination, access and analytics; means of implementation; and a framework on a transformative strategy for the global statistical system in support of the post-2015 development agenda. The event is organized as a High-Level Forum of official statisticians with the purpose to seek a broad consensus on the strategic agenda for statistics to be considered during the 46th Session of the Statistical Commission in March 2015.

Policy Update #4: Biodiversity, People and Parks: Nature-Based Solutions Bring All Three Together for Sustainable Development [viewed]

Taking place just once every 10 years, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Parks Congress (WPC) allows for a long view – both of past achievements in biodiversity conservation and of the trajectory of conservation efforts. In this regard, WPC in Sydney, Australia, in November 2014 was uniquely placed, occurring at the mid-point between the adoption of the Aichi Targets in 2010 and their deadline for achievement in 2020.

Event: Global Landscapes Forum 2015 [viewed]

The third annual Global Landscapes Forum will take place on 6 December 2015, in Paris, France, conciding with the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). A successor to past Forest Days and Agriculture and Rural Development Days, the Forum focuses on land use as a key sector for achieving global climate and sustainability goals, and brings together stakeholders from different land-use sectors. In previous years, Global Landscapes Forum coordinating partners have included the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), the Consortium of International Agricultural Research Centers (CGIAR) Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).
