CMS COP11 Adopts Record Number of Listing Proposals [viewed]

copcms9 November 2014: The eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP11) to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) approved thirty-one proposals to add species to the Convention's two appendices. In closing the meeting, Ecuador Minister of Environment, Lorena Tapia, said that COP11 participants “made borders disappear” by making firm decisions and commitments for action on migratory species' conservation.

ITTC Announces US$8.3 Million in Funding, Deliberates ITTO Executive Director Appointment [viewed]

ITTC-508 November 2014: The 50th session of the International Tropical Timber Council (ITTC-50) came to a close with delegates authorizing US$8.3 million in financing for International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) activities such as capacity building for transboundary biodiversity conservation, and continued implementation of thematic programmes focused on trade and market transparency, forest governance and reducing deforestation. The Council also undertook lengthy discussions on the appointment of the next ITTO Executive Director.

Event: Latin America Sub-regional Capacity-Building Workshop on Biosafety [viewed]

Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the goal of this workshop is to enhance the capacity of Parties in the Latin American sub-region to advance the implementation of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety and its Nagoya – Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress through effective integration of biosafety into National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and national development plans in line with the Strategic Plan for the Protocol and the relevant Aichi Biodiversity Targets. It also aims to increase the capacity of Parties to identify and mobilize sufficient and predictable resources for the implementation of the Protocol and facilitate public awareness, education and participation concerning the safe transfer, handling and use of living modified organisms (LMOs).

Illegal Killing, Trapping and Trade in Birds in Focus at CMS COP11 [viewed]

cms-cop106 November 2014: At the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS COP11), in Quito, Ecuador, countries are taking steps to combat the illegal killing, trapping and trade of birds. Parties are also considering including the Great Bustard in Appendix I of the Convention and are expected to agree on a Global Action Plan for the Saker Falcon.

Ceremony Marks Extension of CMS, UAE Agreement; Accessions to CMS MoUs [viewed]

cms-cop105 November 2014: The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) and the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) have signed a Partnership Agreement extension, including a US$1.3 million financial contribution. Under the original Agreement, a CMS office was established in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2009.
