Event: World Water Day [viewed]

World Water Day 2014 takes place on March 22, with events in 2014 focusing on the theme of "Water and Energy". The events this year are coordinated by the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and UN University (UNU). Events celebrating World Water Day will take place across the globe, including in Sri Lanka, the US, the Philippines, Benin, Poland and Tunisia among many others, and are expected to engage stakeholders, government officials, non governmental organizations (NGOs), international organizations and youth on issues related to water and energy.

Event: Second Symposium on Fishery Dependent Information and iMarine Workshop [viewed]

This symposium is an international conference for resource managers, scientists and the fishing sector on the collection and interpretation of information in the context of the ecosystem approach. The conference, hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), will explore the role of fishers in collecting data, the use of fisher-collected data and knowledge in science, management and policy-making and the broader role of stakeholders in this process. It will be immediately followed by the 'iMarine data platform for collaborations' workshop on 7 March 2014. iMarine is the data initiative for fisheries management and conservation of marine living resources. The workshop will showcase how its data infrastructure is capable of addressing the challenges of the ecosystem approach.

ICNP 3 Adopts Recommendations in Preparation for COP/MOP 1, Makes Progress on Compliance [viewed]

CBD3 March 2014: Meeting from 24-28 February 2014, in Pyeongchang, the Republic of Korea, the third Meeting of the Open-ended Ad Hoc Intergovernmental Committee for the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ICNP 3) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) adopted a series of recommendations in preparation for the first meeting of the Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties (COP/MOP 1) to the Protocol.

Pacific Invasives Partnership Highlights GEF Proposal, Learning Network at Annual Meeting [viewed]

SPREP24 February 2014: The Pacific Invasives Partnership held its annual meeting to coordinate planning and share expertise among regional and international agencies working to curb the growing negative impact of invasive species in the region. Key discussions at the meeting included a proposal endorsed by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) to secure funding from the 6th replenishment of the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

Event: WAVES Fourth Partnership Meeting [viewed]

The fourth partnership meeting of the Wealth Accounting and the Valuation of Ecosystem Services (WAVES) program will bring together WAVES countries and partners to share successes and challenges, with a focus on water and ecosystem accounts. It will feature presentations from UN and private sector partners and panel discussions on how natural capital accounts (NCA) support wider development goals. WAVES is a global partnership that aims to promote sustainable development by ensuring that natural resources are mainstreamed in national economic accounts and development planning. The partnership includes UN agencies, governments, international institutes, NGOs and academics. The core implementing countries are Botswana, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Indonesia, Madagascar, the Philippines and Rwanda. WAVES was launched at the 2010 Convention on Biological Diversity meeting in Nagoya, Japan.

Event: Cities Biodiversity Summit [viewed]

The Cities Biodiversity Summit will be co-hosted by the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Secretariat, ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability, and Gangwon Province, the Republic of Korea. It will take place during the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12) to the CBD, bringing together scientists, NGOs and biodiversity experts from around the world. The Summit will take stock of previous Summits and forge actions for implementing a Plan of Action.

Event: 2nd World Summit of Legislators [viewed]

The 2nd World Summit of Legislators is expected to be the world's largest conference of parliamentarians, with over 500 participants representing legislative assemblies from all over the world in attendance. Parliamentarians at the three-day summit, which will take place at the Mexican Congress, are expected to agree to and ratify a resolution on climate, natural capital and forest legislation. This meeting follows the first World Summit of Legislators, which convened from 15-17 June 2012, in the Tiradentes Palace, the original seat of the Brazilian Congress. Since this first meeting, the Global Legislators Organisation (GLOBE) has established the GLOBE Climate Legislation Initiative (GCLI), the GLOBE Natural Capital Initiative (GNCI) and the GLOBE Forest Legislation Initiative (GFLI), all of which will report to the 2nd Summit, as well as provide national legislation examples put forward by GLOBE legislators. The GLOBE Natural Capital Initiative (GNCI) seeks to raise awareness on the benefits of ecosystem valuation and wealth accounting, in order to establish a political support-base for the introduction and long-term uptake of the natural capital approach. Event: Eleventh Meeting of the Compliance Committee under the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety [viewed]

In accordance with its work plan, the Compliance Committee will address the following issues: consistency between the information in national reports and the Biosafety Clearing-House; the methodological approach proposed for the Protocol's third assessment and review; the third national reporting format; general issues of compliance; and the Committee's report and recommendations to the seventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Protocol (COP-MOP 7) to be held in October 2014.
