Poaching Endangering World Heritage Sites [viewed]

com3823 June 2014: During the 38th Session of the World Heritage Committee, the Committee lamented the impacts of poaching and illicit wildlife trade on World Heritage Sites and called for strengthened cooperation with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) to protect listed Sites.

Event: ITPGR 10th Anniversary Celebration [viewed]

Co-organized by the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR) and the Geneva, Switzerland, office of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) under the patronage of the ITPGR High-Level Task Force, this high-level event will mark the tenth anniversary of the ITPGR's entry into force. The event will focus on the Treaty's role in addressing food-deficiencies in low income countries and preview future contributions to technology innovation for food security, agricultural biodiversity conservation and climate adaptation. The agenda includes presentations on recent activities and achievements in benefit-sharing and a round table discussion on future challenges and opportunities. In addition, an overview of the currently on-going third round of projects under the Treaty's Benefit-sharing Fund will aim to showcase the vital role of plant genetic resources in ensuring global food security and the success of the Treaty's system of access and benefit-sharing (ABS). The event will also highlight recent progress with regard to non-monetary benefit-sharing through the development of the Treaty's Global Information System on plant genetic resources, including a new initiative on seeds and genomics called “DivSeek.”

Our Ocean Conference Garners Over $800 Million in Ocean Conservation Commitments [viewed]

our-ocean17 June 2014: US Secretary of State John Kerry announced that the US State Department's 'Our Ocean' conference resulted in more than US$800 million in government and private sector commitments to conserve the ocean and its resources. The conference aimed to develop strategies for protecting oceans through three pillars focused on: sustainable fisheries; marine pollution from land-based and ocean-based sources; and ocean acidification, as addressed in the ‘Our Ocean Action Plan.'

COFO 22 Opens, FAO Launches State of the World's Forests 2014 [viewed]

FAO23 June 2014: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has released the 2014 edition of its landmark publication on 'The State of the World's Forests' (SOFO). The publication highlights the important role of forests and forest products in supporting livelihoods, noting that forests remain undervalued in decision-making.

Working Group Discusses Scope, Parameters and Feasibility of Agreement on BBNJ [viewed]

United Nations19 June 2014: The eighth meeting of the UN General Assembly's (UNGA) Ad Hoc Open-ended Informal Working Group to study issues relating to the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity beyond areas of national jurisdiction (BBNJ) worked to clarify a series of substantive elements of a new agreement on BBNJ that were considered necessary to prepare recommendations to the UNGA at the next meeting of the Working Group, scheduled to take place in January 2015.

Event: 14th Congo Basin Forests Partnership (CBFP) Anchor Workshop [viewed]

Major Groups and Stakeholders Forward Input to First UNEA Meeting [viewed]

unea23 June 2014: Ahead of the first session of the UN Environment Assembly of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum (GMGSF) met to facilitate the preparations of Major Groups and Stakeholders towards the first UNEA, allowing them to discuss the main UNEA themes and to prepare their input to UNEA. UNEA will hold its first session on 23-27 June to discuss ‘Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the post-2015 development agenda, including sustainable consumption and production (SCP).' The session will also address illegal trade in wildlife and related environmental crime.

CBD WGRI 5 Adopts Recommendations on Strategic, Cooperation and Financial Issues [viewed]

Chair-Hem-Pande20 June 2014: The fifth meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on the Review of Implementation (WGRI 5) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) adopted recommendations to the CBD Conference of the Parties (COP) on a range of implementation, strategic and financial issues. An informal dialogue session held during the meeting focused on mainstreaming biodiversity in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and mobilization of resources for achieving the Aichi targets.
