Event: 2016 IUCN World Conservation Congress [viewed]

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Congress meets every four years to bring together leaders from government, the public sector, non-governmental organizations, business, UN agencies and indigenous and grass-roots organizations to discuss and decide on solutions to environment and development challenges worldwide. The event will hold a public forum consisting of debates, workshops, dialogues, round-table discussions, training courses, music and exhibitions, as well as a Members\' Assembly that will deliberate on IUCN resolutions and recommendations regarding key conservation issues.

Event: Second International Ocean Research Conference (IORC) [viewed]

The Second International Ocean Research Conference (IORC) will bring together the global scientific community to plan for the coming decade of international collaboration in marine science and technology. IORC will also focus on improving ocean governance. The event includes 16 thematic sessions that will focus on: building scientific knowledge; applying knowledge for societal benefit: achieving ecosystem management and sustainability; and improving governance and building capacity. The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization\'s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) (UNESCO-IOC) and The Oceanographic Society are organizing the conference.

Asian Shark Fishing and Trading States Adopt Xiamen Declaration [viewed]

CITES12 June 2014: A regional workshop for key Asian shark fishing and trading States reviewed the status of sharks as well as the legal, administrative and management regimes for shark fisheries. Participants assessed the challenges and opportunities afforded by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) marine species listings.

UNGA Elects Sam Kutesa of Uganda as 69th UNGA President [viewed]

MEA Knowledge Management Initiative Discusses Information Portal on MEAs [viewed]

InforMEA9 June 2014: Four UN entities, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and other key partners met for the fifth annual meeting of the Steering Committee of the Multilateral Environmental Agreements Knowledge Management Initiative (MEA IKM). The initiative, a knowledge management project within the UN system, seeks to develop harmonized information systems to facilitate the successful implementation of 18 MEAs.

Event: First Session of the CGRFA Team of Technical and Legal Experts on ABS (TTLE ABS-1) [viewed]

Event: World Day to Combat Desertification Observance Event [viewed]

Heads of State and Government, Ministers, and representatives of intergovernmental organizations, the private sector and civil society will gather at World Bank Headquarters in Washington, DC, US, on Tuesday, 17 June 2014, for the global observance of the World Day to Combat Desertification. The event will address the theme 'Land Belongs to the Future – Let's Climate Proof It'. The full-day event include an opening ceremony, panel discussions, a concert, an exhibition and a film screening, among other activities. The event will also be webcast.

Event: Third Session of the CGRFA Technical Working Group on Forest Genetic Resources [viewed]

The third session of the Intergovernmental Technical Working Group on Forest Genetic Resources of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA) will address issues related to the Global Plan of Action on Forest Genetic Resources, genetic diversity and climate change, biodiversity and nutrition, application and integration of biotechnologies, and access and benefit-sharing for forest genetic resources.
