SBSTTA 15 Considers Indicators for Strategic Plan, Adopts Recommendations to COP [viewed]

11 November 2011: The 15th meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) considered, among other items, a draft set of indicators for monitoring implementation of the CBD Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and measuring progress towards the 2020 Aichi Biodiversity Targets. SBSTTA 15 also adopted eight recommendations to be forwarded to the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the CBD (COP 11).

GEF Council Evaluates Reducing Fees, Discusses Private Sector Engagement [viewed]

10 November 2011: During its 41st meeting, the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council approved its work programme for the next year and initiated the search for a new CEO. The work programme includes 40 project concepts and nine programmatic approaches, including 11 for the biodiversity focal area, eight on climate change, two on international waters, 23 on land degradation, and five on persistent organic pollutants (POPs).

GEF Council Approves Projects on Biodiversity and Blue Carbon [viewed]

10 November 2011: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council, at its 41st Council Meeting, approved decisions on the administration of the GEF, as well as a work programme including several biodiversity-related projects on protected areas, and an innovative International Waters initiative, the “Blue Forests” effort to estimate the carbon sequestration capacity of coastal habitats like mangroves, sea grass beds, coral reefs and salt marshes, and demonstrate their economic value.

CCAMLR Adopts Measures on IUU Fishing and MPAs [viewed]

4 November 2011: At its annual meeting, the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) adopted measures to: fight illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing; create marine protected areas (MPAs); and enhance the management of krill fisheries. Proposals on market-related measures and on port state measures, however, were not adopted.

Asian Wetland Symposium Adopts Wuxi Declaration [viewed]

24 October 2011: The Asian Wetland Symposium on Human Well-being and Wetlands brought together 800 participants from 19 countries, including many officials from local governments in China. The event concluded with the adoption of the Wuxi Declaration, in which participants call for a series of actions to be taken for wetland conservation and wise use.

World Association of Zoos and Aquariums Endorses UN Decade on Biodiversity [viewed]

14 October 2011: At its annual conference, the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) formally endorsed the UN Decade on Biodiversity and decided to develop a framework to guide the participation of zoos and aquariums in the achievement of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020.

WIPO General Assembly Renews IGC Mandate [viewed]

5 October 2011: The General Assembly of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), at its 40th (20th ordinary) session, held from 26 September-5 October 2011, in Geneva, Switzerland, decided to renew the mandate of the Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore (IGC) for the 2012-2013 biennium.

Lucerne World Mountain Conference Calls for Strong Message at Rio+20 [viewed]

12 October 2011: The Lucerne World Mountain Conference adopted a Call for Action, including for adapting and developing mountain governance to avoid poverty, food insecurity and social exclusion. The Conference aimed to highlight the importance of mountains and feed into the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).

Forest Conference Makes Green Economy Recommendations to Rio+20 [viewed]

International Year of Forests 20117 October 2011: The Conference on Forests in a Green Economy has concluded with recommended actions on how to realize the potential of forests to help build a green economy. The recommendations and conclusions of the conference will be submitted to both the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) in 2012 and the 10th Session of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF 10), to be held in 2013.

G-77/China Ministers Call for Implementation of Strategic Plan for Biodiversity, Aichi Biodiversity Targets [viewed]

29 September 2011: The Ministerial Declaration of the Group of 77 and China, adopted on 23 September 2011 in New York, recognizes the important outcomes of the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the fifth meeting of the COP serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, and calls for implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020.
