16 May 2013: At the first International Conference on Forests for Food Security and Nutrition, participants examined the role of forests and agroforestry systems in supporting livelihoods around the world.
9 May 2013: Faced with a new lethal disease, Bogia syndrome, which affects coconut palms, other palm species and some banana varieties, Bioversity International, a member of the Consultative Group on International Agriculture Research (CGIAR), is working with a coconut genebank in Madang Province, Papua New Guinea, to fight the disease and to re-locate a coconut genebank.
6 May 2013: As part of the 58th annual meeting of the Central American Cooperative Programme for the Improvement of Crops and Animals (Programa Cooperativo Centroamericano para el Mejoramiento de Cultivos y Animales (PCCMCA), held from 22-26 April 2013, working groups were established to address priorities and challenges in adapting to climate change in the region.
March 2013: The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) has released a report on great ape conservation and poverty alleviation. The report considers REDD+, tourism, human-wildlife conflict, and great ape biology.
30 April 2013: A recent publication by a group of research institutions, including Bioversity International, documents the results of multi-site trials on pine species that aim to better understand options for choosing optimal species for forestry in the face of climate change.
24 April 2013: The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) has taken steps to move toward wider availability of information and data through the circulation of a draft Open Access policy among the CGIAR Programs and Centers.
16 April 2013: A UN Environment Programme (UNEP)-Global Environment Facility (GEF) Project, implemented by Bioversity International, will be officially launched in May to address issues of farming and biodiversity conservation within two Cuban "Man and the Biosphere Reserves."
April 2013: The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) Research Program on Forests, Trees and Agroforestry (CRP-FTA) has released its 2012 CRP Performance Monitoring Report.
In September 2013, the biennial Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) Science Forum will bring together scientists, practitioners, experts and leading thinkers to examine emerging challenges and recent scientific advances in the areas of nutrition, health and agriculture. The Forum seeks to identify key research areas where there is potential to deliver impacts and, critically, it aims to facilitate the formation of new partnerships to address them. The event will reach out to scientists and scientific communities who may not be part of CGIAR, but who have potentially important contributions to make to the CGIAR research portfolio, and therefore to the global agriculture research agenda for a food secure future.
25 March 2013: Bioversity International has published "Diversifying Diets: Using Agricultural Biodiversity to Improve Nutrition and Food Security," which explores the current state of knowledge on the role of agricultural biodiversity in diet, nutrition and food security, with a focus on key research, implementation gaps and strategies for improving nutrition.
