SPC to Collaborate with Caribbean on Conservation of Genetic Resources [viewed]

SPC16 April 2012: The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) Centre for Pacific Crops and Trees (CePaCT), which aims to assist Pacific Island countries and territories (PICTs) in the conservation of the region's genetic resources by keeping collections of many plants, has announced it will collaborate with the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI) to share experience and expertise.

Event: Forests: The 8th Roundtable at Rio+20 [viewed]

This Roundtable is coordinated by the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), in the lead up to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20). It is based on the recognition that forests have been largely excluded from most of the key discussions in the preparations for Rio+20, despite making important contributions toward solving many sustainable development challenges. The event aims to ensure that forests remain high on the agenda in 2012. Participants will discuss new research findings, remaining knowledge gaps and the policy implications for integrating forests into the solutions to several key challenges to progress toward a green economy, namely: energy, water, climate, food and income. CIFOR is a member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).

Event: International Workshop on Corruption, Natural Resources and the Environment [viewed]

This workshop will be organized by the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), the Asia Pacific Network for Environmental Governance, and the Australian National University. The organizers are inviting papers on: the social and economic impacts of corruption in biodiversity management, climate change activities, fisheries, forestry, and water management; and the theory and practice of anti-corruption policies in resource and environmental management. CIFOR is a member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).

Ministers Adopt Andean Environment Agenda, Water Resources Management Action Plan [viewed]

11 April 2012: The Andean Community (CAN) has approved the Andean Environmental Agenda (known by its Spanish acronym AAA) for the period 2012-2016, outlining common actions and capacity-building measures regarding climate change, biodiversity and water resources for Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, and the Action Plan for implementing CAN's Andean Strategy for Integrated Management of Water Resources (known by its Spanish acronym GIRH).

Bioversity International Announces it is Reducing European and Developed Country Activities [viewed]

April 2012: In the April issue of its "Newsletter for Europe," Bioversity International has announced that it will no longer carry out direct research in Europe or other developed country regions, in order to better align with a focus on the use of agricultural biodiversity by smallholders in developing countries, and in situ conservation, as is consistent with the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) and Bioversity International.

Shortlist for 2014 European Green Capital Award Released [viewed]

12 April 2012: The European Commission has announced that out of 18 applicants for the 2014 European Green Capital award, Bristol, Copenhagen and Frankfurt have been named as finalists. The award is presented annually to a city that represents “the vanguard of environmentally friendly urban living,” with cities being judged, inter alia, on: climate change contributions; transport; sustainable land use; nature and biodiversity; air quality; water production and management; water consumption and treatment; sustainable employment; and energy performance.
