CITES Improves Virtual Course for Customs Officials [viewed]

CITES19 July 2012: The Secretariat of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) has announced that an updated and improved version of the course for customs officials is now available through the CITES Virtual College. The course is designed to assist officials in identifying and processing specimens of CITES-listed species.

MERCOSUR Leaders Discuss Sustainable Development Post-Rio+20 [viewed]

29 June 2012: The Presidents of the Southern Cone Common Market (MERCOSUR) Member States have issued a declaration addressing sustainable development, climate change, global mercury negotiations and mining. The leaders were meeting during a semi-annual summit, held on 29 June 2012, in Mendoza, Argentina. Immediately thereafter, a summit with the Associate States of Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru adopted two additional declarations.

FAO, OSPESCA Promote Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries in SICA [viewed]

21 June 2012: The Fisheries and Aquaculture Sector Organization of the Central American Isthmus (OSPESCA), supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), held a workshop to launch the process of promoting the ecosystem approach to sustainable fisheries and aquaculture production in the Central American Integration System (SICA) countries of Belize, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama.

BioCAN Promotes Best Practices in Sharing Benefits from Biodiversity [viewed]

12 July 2012: The Andean Community's (CAN) biodiversity program, BioCAN, held a workshop aimed at sharing concepts and tools for improving the benefits of products derived from biodiversity and sustainable management of wild species. Participants addressed how best to organize pilot projects, with a focus on lessons learned, and discussed building a set of subregional guidelines on best practice in benefit sharing along the value chain for such products.

IPBES Announces Timeline for Intersessional Process [viewed]

June 2012: Following the establishment of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), participants agreed to an intersessional process to support both preparation for the first plenary meeting of the Platform, planned for early 2013, and development of the first IPBES work programme. The agreement came after the second session of the plenary meeting on an IPBES, held in Panama City, Panama, in April 2012.

IWC Discusses Aboriginal Subsistence Whaling, Environmental and Health Matters [viewed]

6 July 2012: The 64th Annual Meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) and the associated meetings of its Scientific Committee and other sub-groups took place in Panama City, Panama, from 11 June - 6 July 2012. The Commission addressed administrative and substantive matters, including aboriginal subsistence whaling, animal welfare, and climate change and cetaceans.

CROP Receives New Support for Regional Projects [viewed]

29 June 2012: The Council of the Regional Organisations of the Pacific (CROP) has received a donation of US$500,000 from the Taiwan/ROC Regional Development Assistance Fund for 2011/2012, for the support and implementation of CROP agencies' regional projects. These projects address education and capacity building, regional aviation safety, fisheries, marine and water management, and the Smaller Island States (SIS) programmes.
