IPBES Receives Comments on Intersessional Process [viewed]

August 2012: The Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has announced that comments have been received on the intersessional process. The intersessional process was agreed following the second session of the plenary meeting, during which IPBES was established, in Panama City, Panama, in April 2012. The process aims to facilitate operationalization of the Platform, support preparation for its first plenary meeting, and support development of its first work programme.

CCAFS Report Focuses on Genetic Diversity in Agricultural Adaptation to Climate Change [viewed]

August 2012: Considering the importance of genetic diversity to successful agricultural adaptation, the Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security Program (CCAFS) has released a working paper that outlines the experience of eight centres of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) with reorganizing their activities to work on climate change adaptation.

Pacific Preparatory Meeting for COP 11 Focuses on Effective Engagement [viewed]

10 August 2012: Participants at the Pacific Regional Preparatory Meeting for the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Conference of the Parties 11 (COP 11) gathered in Rotorua, New Zealand, from 10-13 August 2012, to prepare to engage at the international level in an effective manner. The meeting was coordinated by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), and funded by the EU through the African Caribbean Pacific Multilateral Environment Agreement (ACP MEAs) Capacity Building Project, in partnership with the CBD Secretariat.

Event: Joint Meeting on the Economics of Land Degradation and Adoption of Sustainable Land Practices [viewed]

The Economics of Land Degradation (ELD) secretariat, on behalf of the partner organizations, is coordinating a Joint Meeting on the Economics of Land Degradation and Adoption of Sustainable Land Practices, which will take place on 1-2 October 2012, in Brussels, Belgium. The two-day meeting will bring together invited academics, political decision makers and actors from the private sector to provide for inter-sectoral discussions in the course of the ELD initiative. Discussions will focus on the valuation of land and land-based ecosystem services in supporting decision-making in the process of economical, environmental and social sustainable development. The meeting is jointly organized by the ELD Secretariat and the United Nations University (UNU-INWEH) and will be funded by the German Ministry for Development and Economic Cooperation, the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the European Commission. The latter will also be hosting the meeting.

Event: Global Soil Week: Soils for Life [viewed]

The First Global Soil Week will provide a platform to initiate follow-up actions on land and soil-related decisions made at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) and will take place in the framework of the FAO's Global Soil Partnership. This event will provide a forum of interactive exchange and dialogue among stakeholders from science, government, business and civil society. The event is organized through a collaboration between the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies' (IASS') Global Soil Forum and the European Commission (EC), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the German Federal Environmental Agency (UBA), the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

FAO and Bioversity International Release Book Calling for Sustainable Diets and Food Biodiversity [viewed]

8 August 2012: A new book, titled "Sustainable Diets and Biodiversity: Directions and Solutions for Policy, Research and Action," urges action to promote sustainable diets and food biodiversity for the health of humans and the Earth. The book contains the proceedings of the International Scientific Symposium titled "Biodiversity and Sustainable Diets United Against Hunger," which convened in November 2010.

CABI Launches Knowledge Bank on Plant Health Information [viewed]

July 2012: The Commonwealth Agricultural Bureaux International (CABI) has launched the Plantwise Knowledge Bank, a web-based portal that combines plant health information with diagnostic tools, fact sheets and other information resources to assist farmers in identifying and controlling crop pests.

Event: Forest Day 6: Shaping the Global Agenda for Forests and Climate [viewed]

Forest Day 6 will take place on the sidelines of the 18th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 18) to the UNFCCC. It seeks to inform UNFCCC's global agenda and forest stakeholders on ways to move forward with agreements on REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, and the role of conservation, sustainable use of forests and enhancement of carbon stock) reached at COP 17 in Durban, South Africa, to produce social and environmental benefits, good governance, long-term financing and the integration of forests into adaptation strategies on the ground. Forest Day is hosted by members of the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF) and coordinated by the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) on behalf of and in collaboration with other CPF members.
