European Court of Justice Rules Against National Authorization Requirements [viewed]

6 September 2012: The European Court of Justice has ruled that the cultivation of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) approved at the EU level cannot be made subject to an additional national authorization procedure. Also according to the ruling, cultivation cannot be prohibited pending the adoption of coexistence measures.

ICRAF Newsletter Highlights 2011-2012 Annual Report, Nairobi Science Forum [viewed]

4 September 2012: The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) published the August issue of its "Transformations" newsletter, which announces the release of its Annual Report, highlighting issues related to sustainable soil and water management, climate change, value chain management and conservation of native tree species. The newsletter also includes articles addressing farms, food security and climate change adaptation, and notes key publications and the Science Forum in Nairobi, Kenya.

Event: IPBES-1 [viewed]

The first meeting of the Plenary of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES-1) will be hosted by the Government of Germany. The meeting will aim to agree on the remaining rules of procedures for the meetings of the platform, consider other rules of procedure for the platform, elect Bureau and Multidisciplinary Expert Panel members, and agree on the next steps by which the IPBES work programme can become operational as soon as possible. IPBES-1 will be a meeting of Members of the Platform's plenary, with observers. Regional and stakeholder consultations will take place one day prior to the meeting, on 20 January 2013.

ASEAN-Korea Forestry Meeting Adopts Seoul Declaration [viewed]

30 August 2012: The Korea Forest Service (KFS) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) concluded the first session of the Governing Council of the Agreement on ASEAN-Korea Forest Cooperation, adopting the Seoul Declaration on Forestry. The meeting also noted the establishment of the Asia Forestry Cooperation Organization (AFoCO), which will encompass the 20% of the world's tropical forests that lie within the ASEAN countries.

Event: Thirteenth Dialogue on Forests, Governance and Climate Change [viewed]

The 13th RRI Dialogue, sub-titled "Status of Tenure Reforms in West and Central Africa and Impacts of Large-Scale Land Acquisitions, Extractive and Infrastructure Sectors," is being organized by the Rights and Resources Initiative (RRI), the Commission des Forets d'Afrique Centrale (COMIFAC), the Cameroonian Ministry of Forest and Wildlife (MINFOF), and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Participants will take stock of tenure reform in Central and West Africa since 2009, examining new pressures on forest lands from large scale land acquisitions, extractive industries, and infrastructure projects. This event was originally scheduled to take place in October, as the 12th RRI dialogue.

Bled Strategic Forum Provides Platform to Discuss Global Challenges [viewed]

2 September 2012: The Seventh Bled Strategic Forum (BSF), held from 1-3 September 2012, in Bled, Slovenia, addressed issues including the financial crises, the Arab revolutions, China and EU challenges. Speaking during the Forum, Janez Potočnik, European Commissioner for the Environment, discussed the challenges that limited resources – water, land, energy, oceans, raw materials, biodiversity and ecosystems – pose to the globe and the EU.

Tuiloma Neroni Slade Appointed First Ocean Commissioner [viewed]

28 August 2012: The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) has announced the appointment of Tuiloma Neroni Slade, Secretary-General of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS), as the inaugural Ocean Commissioner. Slade's appointment seeks to provide the Pacific community with a high-level spokesperson to spearhead the Pacific Oceanscape initiative.

OIE Launches Updated World Animal Health Information System [viewed]

27 August 2012: The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) has launched an updated and expanded version of the World Animal Health Information System (WAHIS), including a new section on wildlife disease notification. The new section allows members to enter complementary data on OIE-listed diseases of wild animal species, and to provide information on non-listed diseases.
