Event: AfDB Annual Meetings 2015 [viewed]

During its Annual Meetings 2015, the African Development Bank (AfDB) will celebrate its 50th anniversary and elect its next president. The meetings will be held under the theme 'Africa and the New Global Landscape'. The agenda includes, inter alia: the launches of the African Economic Outlook (AEO 2015) and the Africa Ecological Futures Report; discussions on youth leaders, gender equality, Ebola, agribusiness, Africa's Power Challenge, local currency bond markets, stock exchanges, and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH); high-level events on the anticipated global climate change agreement and financing Africa's development post-2015; and meetings of the Board of Governors.

UN Urges Improved Water Governance and Action on World Water Day [viewed]

un-water22 March 2015: On World Water Day, UN leaders and others called for urgent cooperation to ensure access to safe drinking water and sanitation. The 2015 World Water Development Report (WWDR), which the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) launched for the Day, recommends a dedicated Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) on water, which the report says would contribute to poverty alleviation and improvements in the environment, health and food and energy production.

GMS Countries Call for Investment in Natural Capital Assets [viewed]

ADB29 January 2015: Environment ministers from the six Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) countries agreed that natural capital assets, such as forests and farmlands, are the basis for sustainable development in the region, at the close of the Fourth GMS Environment Ministers' Meeting (EMM4). They also called for timely and effective investment in the protection and enhancement of these assets.

Event: Fourth GMS Environment Ministers Meeting [viewed]

The Asian Development Bank is organising this event in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar, on development in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), bringing together over 200 leading policy and decision makers from government and non-government organisations for a series of events on the theme, “Increasing Investments in Natural Capital in the GMS”. The three days of meetings will include a natural capital business forum, a biodiversity landscapes forum, a youth environment meeting and one-day natural capital dialogue. Environment ministers from the six GMS countries of China, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam will meet on the third day.

GEF Updates on Sustainable Cities, Deforestation and Food Security Programmes [viewed]

GEF5 January 2015: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has released its first updates on three 'integrated approach' programmes focused on: sustainable cities; taking deforestation out of commodity supply chains; and food security in sub-Saharan Africa. The updates provide an overview of the history, background and aims of each programme as well as their next steps. Each of the three programmes is expected to submit a Programmatic Framework Document to the 48th GEF Council Meeting in June 2015.

ADB Workshop Examines Climate Change Implications in Mekong Region [viewed]

ADB-Greater Mekong10 October 2014: Following a workshop that examined 'Mekong Protected Areas and Climate Change – Implications for Livelihoods and Development,' over 60 participants from the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) are returning home to implement country action plans based on the best practices, tools and adaptation strategies learned at the workshop. The results of the workshop will also inform the 'Protected Areas, Development, and Climate Change in the GMS (PAD2)' project, set to commence in 2015.

IFPRI, AfDB Publish Review of GM Crops in Africa [viewed]

ifpri-afdbOctober 2014: The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and African Development Bank (AfDB) have released a report detailing the current status of biotechnology in Africa, with particular focus on genetically modified (GM) crops. The report, titled 'GM Agricultural Technologies for Africa: A State of Affairs,' considers the potential pros and cons of expanding Africa's currently limited use of GM crops and outlines the barriers to their adoption.
