GEF Council Approves US$259.84 Million Work Program [viewed]

45th-meeting-of-the-GEF-Council7 November 2013: The 45th meeting of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council considered, inter alia: the progress report on the pilot accreditation of GEF Project Agencies; the mid-term evaluation of the System for Transparent Allocation of Resources (STAR); the mid-term evaluation of the National Portfolio Formulation Exercise (NPFE); an update on the GEF-6 replenishment; a review of GEF Agencies on their application of environmental and social safeguards and gender mainstreaming; and an update on the development of the GEF 2020 strategy. The GEF Council also approved a Work Program amounting to US$259.84 million.

Austria Provides US$2.2 Million through CBD LifeWeb Initiative [viewed]

LifeWeb31 October 2013: The Government of Austria has approved funding of US$2.2 million through the LifeWeb Initiative to help implement the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) through projects in Bangladesh, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia and the Lao People's Democratic Republic.

CBD Secretariat Recognizes Natural Capital Declaration as a Biodiversity Champion [viewed]

International Congress on Marine Protected Areas Calls for Law of Sea Negotiations on Conservation [viewed]

impac27 October 2013: Participants at the Third International Congress on Marine Protected Areas (IMPAC3) discussed strategies to meet the Convention on Biological Diversity's (CBD) Aichi Target 11 under the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020, which calls for at least 10 per cent of all coastal and marine areas to be managed as conservation or protected areas by the year 2020.

Event: 2014 International Day for Biological Diversity: Island Biodiversity [viewed]

To coincide with the designation by the UN General Assembly of 2014 as the International Year of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), the theme of the International Day for Biological Diversity 2014 will be 'Island Biodiversity'. A Special Event to celebrate the Day will be hosted by the Permanent Missions of Grenada, Samoa, Palau, Papua New Guinea and Mauritius, as well as the Global Island Partnership (GLISPA), at UN Headquarters (contact krishna1@un.org). Worldwide, more than 44 countries have registered events and activities in support of the Day.

CBD SBSTTA 17 Identifies Key Scientific and Technical Needs for Implementation of the Strategic Plan [viewed]

CBD21 October 2013: Convened from 14-18 October 2013, in Montreal, Canada, the seventeenth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA 17) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) featured a new format aiming to enhance its scientific and technical focus. SBSTTA 17 focused on the scientific and technical needs related to the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and its Aichi targets, and its contribution to the intersessional process of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).
