Event: CBD Regional Workshops for the Caribbean on the Preparation of the Fifth National Report and on the Clearing-House Mechanism [viewed]

Event: CBD Regional Workshop for the Pacific on the Preparation of the Fifth National Report [viewed]

Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) with support from the Governments of Japan and Fiji and in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), this workshop aims to strengthen countries' capacities in assessing the status and trends of biodiversity, in reviewing implementation of national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs) and in measuring progress towards the Aichi biodiversity targets.

Event: LEG Workshop on Adaptation for Asian LDCs [viewed]

Organized by the Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), this workshop will provide technical guidance and advice to the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) in addressing adaptation to climate change through the National Adaptation Programmes of Action (NAPAs), the LDC work programme and the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) process, through the exchange of information, and the promotion of regional synergies and synergies with other conventions. It will be preceded by a one-day preparatory meeting organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) on 19 August, to discuss, among other issues, integration of biodiversity and climate change adaptation at the national level, progress in revising and updating national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs) and synergies in implementing the objectives of all three Rio Conventions at the national level. Participation of biodiversity experts in the UNFCCC workshop is facilitated through collaboration with the CBD Secretariat.

CBD Secretariat Launches Testing of Guidance for LMO Risk Assessment [viewed]

CBD19 June 2013: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is inviting Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety to test the draft guidance on risk assessment of living modified organisms (LMOs) as part of a process to improve the guidance before the Conference of the Parties serving as the seventh Meeting of the Parties to the Protocol (COP-MOP 7).

Draft CBD Study on Article 8(j) Work Programme Tasks and the ABS Protocol Available for Peer Review [viewed]

CBD12 June 2013: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has circulated for peer review a draft study on how tasks 7 (guidelines to ensure equitable benefit-sharing, prior informed consent and identification of obligations of countries of origin and user countries), 10 (standards and guidelines for the reporting and prevention of unlawful appropriation of traditional knowledge and related genetic resources) and 12 (guidelines to assist governments in implementing Article 8(j)(traditional knowledge)) of the revised programme of work on Article 8(j) and related provisions of the Convention could best contribute to work under the Convention and the Nagoya Protocol on access and benefit-sharing (ABS).

Event: Fourth ASEAN Heritage Parks Conference [viewed]

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) will organize the Fourth ASEAN Heritage Parks (AHP) Conference in the Philippines, with support from the GIZ Biodiversity and Climate Change Project, and the Government of the Philippines' Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Department of Tourism. The conference is for park managers in Southeast Asia to discuss how to achieve international biodiversity targets and identify opportunities for international cooperation. Thematic sessions will be organized on: effective management of protected areas; biodiversity and climate change; integrating biodiversity values; ecotourism, business and biodiversity; and indigenous and local communities in protected areas. AHP conferences take place every three years. The ACB serves as the secretariat of the AHP Programme, which aims to ensure that park managers, policy makers, conservationists, scientists and other stakeholders benefit from available best practices and lessons on the management of AHPs and other protected areas. The ASEAN Declaration on Heritage Parks was agreed and signed by the environment ministers of the 10 ASEAN Member States in December 2003 in Yangon, Myanmar. There are more than 32 ASEAN Heritage Parks in the region.
