Event: Regional Capacity-Building Workshop for the Pacific Region on Traditional Knowledge and Customary Sustainable Use under the CBD [viewed]

At this workshop, participants will consider, among other items: the CBD Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and the Aichi Biodiversity Targets; participation of indigenous and local communities (ILCs) in the work of the Convention; Articles 8(j) (traditional knowledge), 10(c) (customary sustainable use) and related provisions, and current work in preparation for the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12); the Joint Programme of Work between the CBD Secretariat and the UN Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on Biological and Cultural Diversity and ILCs; and ILCs and the Nagoya Protocol.

Event: Inter-Regional Capacity-Building Workshop on REDD+ and Aichi Biodiversity Targets [viewed]

This workshop is organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in collaboration with the UN Environment Programme - World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC), with financial support from Japan. Through the inter-regional workshop, the CBD and UNEP-WCMC aim to explore the synergies between the Aichi Biodiversity Targets and objectives of REDD+ to develop a coherent approach to landscape planning processes. The workshop aims to support Parties in: increasing coordination between REDD+ and CBD focal points through sharing experiences and knowledge; integrating REDD+ actions into updated National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and mainstreaming into broader national policies; and demonstrating the appropriate data gathering processes, assessments, policies and other planning tools for implementing a coherent approach to REDD+ and NBSAPs. The workshop will take place back-to-back with the 'Capacity-Building Workshop for Mesoamerica on Ecosystem Conservation and Restoration.'

Event: Capacity-Building Workshop for Mesoamerica on Ecosystem Conservation and Restoration to Support Achievement of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets [viewed]

This workshop, organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), is part of a series being organized with financial assistance from Japan, Germany, Canada and the Republic of Korea. Through the workshop, the Secretariat plans to offer capacity-building to Parties within an integrated and participatory approach to promote holistic planning and implementation at the landscape level. The workshop aims to offer support in: development of national targets and plans for ecosystem conservation and restoration; integration of these targets and plans into updated National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and mainstreaming into broader national policies, plans and programmes; and use of appropriate assessment, policy and planning tools to promote ecosystem conservation and restoration at appropriate levels. The Mesoamerican workshop will take place back-to-back with an Inter-Regional Workshop on REDD+ and Aichi Biodiversity Targets.

Event: Nagoya Protocol on ABS COP/MOP-1 [viewed]

The first meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-sharing (ABS) will be held during the second week of CBD COP-12. It will address, among other issues, the ABS clearing-house, compliance, capacity building and awareness-raising, and the need for and modalities of a global multilateral benefit-sharing mechanism.

CBD Reacts to Recognition of Biodiversity in SDG Proposal [viewed]

CBD25 July 2014: Biodiversity and ecosystems are included throughout the 17 goals and 169 targets proposed by the Open Working Group (OWG) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), according to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The CBD describes the OWG's final outcome as “extremely positive from the perspective of the CBD and the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and the Aichi Biodiversity Targets,” noting the agreement sets the stage for better links between the implementation of the CBD's agenda and the post-2015 development agenda.

Event: Meeting of the "Friends of the Convention on Biological Diversity" [viewed]

With financial support from Switzerland, and co-sponsored by India and the Republic of Korea, this meeting will bring together, among others, members of the Bureau of the Conference of the Parties (COP), the Chair of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) and the incoming COP President, as well as representatives of international organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), indigenous and local communities (ILCs), and the scientific community. Participants will discuss the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020, including through innovative partnerships, and consider, inter alia: national-level implementation; actions that might be taken at the international level to help advance achievement of the Strategic Plan; and how to mainstream biodiversity in other international discussions, for instance, in the post-2015 development agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) process.

CBD Releases Working Group Report on LMO Risk Assessment [viewed]

CBDJuly 2014: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has released the report of the Ad hoc Technical Expert Group (AHTEG) on Risk Assessment and Risk Management under the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. Among other recommendations, the group recommends that the seventh Meeting of the Conference of the Parties serving as Meeting of the Parties to the Protocol (COP-MOP 7) endorse the Guidance on Risk Assessment of Living Modified Organisms (LMOs).
