Event: Latin America Sub-regional Capacity-Building Workshop on Biosafety [viewed]

Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the goal of this workshop is to enhance the capacity of Parties in the Latin American sub-region to advance the implementation of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety and its Nagoya – Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress through effective integration of biosafety into National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and national development plans in line with the Strategic Plan for the Protocol and the relevant Aichi Biodiversity Targets. It also aims to increase the capacity of Parties to identify and mobilize sufficient and predictable resources for the implementation of the Protocol and facilitate public awareness, education and participation concerning the safe transfer, handling and use of living modified organisms (LMOs).

UN Holds Inaugural World Cities Day [viewed]

Conference Adopts Guadeloupe Roadmap on Biodiversity and Climate Change [viewed]

guadeloupe201430 October 2014: High-level representatives and experts from more than 40 countries, territories and independent states attending the ‘International Conference on Biodiversity and Climate Change' adopted the ‘Message from Guadeloupe' on biodiversity loss and climate change impacts in the European Union's (EU) outermost regions (ORs) and overseas countries and territories (OCTs). The message presents a five-year roadmap that addresses five priorities: building resilience to climate change; addressing biodiversity loss; developing a green and blue economy; advancing research; and facilitating access to resources.

ICLEI CBC Launches Project on Conservation in African Urban Environments [viewed]

iclei17 October 2014: At an event on the margins of the 12th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 12), ICLEI Cities Biodiversity Center (CBC) and partners, including the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), launched 'Urban Natural Assets for Africa' (UNA Africa). The project, which will support local implementation of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets in sub-Saharan African cities, will be implemented under the Urban Biosphere Initiative (URBIS).

CBD Secretariat to Provide Guidance on Sustainable Wildlife Management [viewed]

CBD21 October 2014: Mandated by the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the CBD Secretariat will be cooperating with the Collaborative Partnership on Sustainable Wildlife Management to prepare technical guidance on the role of sustainable wildlife management in the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020, and prepare an analysis of the impacts of 'subsistence use' of wildlife on the survival and regeneration of wild species, as well as support Parties in developing and implementing integrated sustainable wildlife management programmes.

CBD COP 12 Adopts Decisions on Marine and Coastal Biodiversity [viewed]

cop12-biodiv17 October 2014: The twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 12) adopted two decisions related to marine and coastal biodiversity: one on ecologically or biologically significant marine areas (EBSAs); and one on other matters, including impacts of anthropogenic underwater noise and ocean acidification, priority actions to achieve Aichi Target 10 (coral reefs), and marine spatial planning (MSP) and training initiatives.
