20 October 2010: In a message to the 12th St. Petersburg International Forestry Forum, taking place in St. Petersburg, Russian Federation, from 19-21 October 2010, Ahmed Djoghlaf, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), highlighted two reports on biodiversity and climate change.
20 October 2010: The UN Environment Programme-World Conservation Monitoring Center (UNEP-WCMC) has launched carbon maps showing how carbon stocks in Asia, Africa and Latin America overlap with biodiversity hot spots. The maps were launched at the 10th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 10) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), convening in Nagoya, Japan.
October 2010: The UN Environment Management Group (EMG) has presented its report, "Advancing the Biological Diversity Agenda: A System-Wide Contribution," at the 10th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 10) which is convening in Nagoya, Japan, from 18-29 October.
18 October 2010: Following the conclusion of the Biosafety Protocol COP/MOP 5, the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 10) opened on 18 October 2010, and will continue until 29 October 2010. The meeting's agenda includes a series of strategic, substantive, administrative and budgetary issues.
15 October 2010: The fifth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (COP/MOP 5) was held from 11-15 October 2011 in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The meeting adopted the Nagoya-Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety and 16 other decisions on biosafety-related issues.
12 October 2010: The International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) has published a special issue of its newsletter, Tropical Forest Update, focused on biodiversity, as part of ITTO's contribution to the International Year of Biodiversity.
12 October 2010: The fourth meeting of the Group of Friends of the Co-Chairs on Liability and Redress in the context of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety reached agreement on outstanding issues with regard to the draft supplementary protocol on liability and redress, namely financial security, the definition of "LMOs and products thereof" and the preamble.
14 October 2010: The Council of the EU Environment Ministers met on 14 October 2010, in Brussels, Belgium, to agree on a strategy for the 10th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 10) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which opens on 18 October 2010, in Nagoya, Japan.
October 2010: The latest issue of Tropical Forest Update, a publication of the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), includes an article on tools and measures for ensuring REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, as well as the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks) provides biodiversity benefits.
The goals of the event are: to highlight the body of work being delivered globally to advance understanding and application of ecosystem and landscape-level approaches to sustainable land use and management; to create a forum comprising representatives with experiences in landscape-level management worldwide; and to develop a strategy for how to ensure this work is integrated into problem solving on sustainable use and management of landscapes and natural resources in light of critical current and future challenges.
