Held immediately before the meeting of the Inter-Agency Support Group on Indigenous Peoples' Issues, this event will focus on the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of the Benefits Arising from their Utilization and its provisions of particular relevance to indigenous and local communities.
November 2012: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has circulated the latest issue of "Business.2020," its magazine on business and biodiversity. The November issue focuses on business and biodiversity in India, and showcases good practices allowing companies to be more sustainable and profitable.
13 November 2012: Angela Cropper, former Deputy Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), passed away on 12 November 2012. Throughout Cropper's international career, she also served as the first Executive Secretary to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and as Senior Adviser on Environment and Development at the UN Development Programme (UNDP) Bureau for Development Policy.
The theme of the International Day for Biological Diversity 2013 will be "Water and Biodiversity;" the theme was chosen to coincide with the UN designation of 2013 as the International Year of Water Cooperation.
8 November 2012: A number of ministers identified education as a key driver in achieving the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Aichi Targets for Biodiversity, on the sidelines of the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the CBD in Hyderabad, India. These ministers highlighted biodiversity awareness-raising activities and education as critical tools for producing concrete solutions to biodiversity challenges.
The twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) will engage in a mid-term review of the implementation of the Strategic Plan and the Aichi targets. The theme of the meeting will be 'Biodiversity for Sustainable Development.' The Meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (COP MOP 7) will take place immediately before COP 12.
2 November 2012: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), in partnership with the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), conducted a capacity building workshop on national level implementation of synergies among the Rio Conventions (CBD, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD)).
October 2012: The seventh issue of [square brackets], the newsletter on the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and civil society, has been made available online. With a special focus on the Aichi biodiversity targets, this issue features the perspectives of the Heads of five agencies that are members of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets Task Force, and of the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
October 2012: Convened in parallel to the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the International Youth Forum Go4BioDiv adopted a declaration on conserving coastal and marine biodiversity for sustaining life and livelihoods.
The purpose of this workshop is to strengthen capacities of African Least Developed Countries (LDCs) for preparing their fifth national reports to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which are due by 31 March 2014, specifically in assessing the status and trends of biodiversity, reviewing implementation of national biodiversity strategies and action plans, and measuring progress towards the 2020 Aichi targets.
