Polar Bear Forum Adopts Declaration, Commits to Completion of 2015 Circumpolar Action Plan [viewed]

polarbearlogo4 December 2013: Ministers from the five polar bear range States have signed a declaration to further polar bear conservation. The declaration recognizes the importance of work over the last forty years and commits to further conservation measures in the context of sustainable livelihoods. Parties have committed to completing a Circumpolar Action Plan by 2015, which will provide for measured and concerted actions to ensure the long-term conservation of the species.

Event: CBD Capacity-Building Workshop for the Pacific on Ecosystem Conservation and Restoration [viewed]

Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the aim of this workshop on ecosystem conservation and restoration to support achievement of the Aichi biodiversity targets is to assist Parties in: the development of national targets and plans for ecosystem conservation and restoration within the framework of Aichi targets 5, 11 and 15; the integration of these targets and plans into updated national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs) and their mainstreaming into broader national policies, plans and programmes; and the use of assessment, policy and planning tools to promote ecosystem conservation and restoration at appropriate levels.

Event: CBD Second Dialogue Seminar on Scaling up Finance for Biodiversity [viewed]

Convened jointly by the Governments of Ecuador, India, Japan, Norway, the Republic of Korea, Sweden, Uganda and the European Commission, the second dialogue seminar aims to enhance mutual understanding of the different views and perspectives on financing for biodiversity. It will focus on the implementation of Aichi targets 2, 3 and 20 in the context of Decision XI/4 on resource mobilization and its three sections on target-setting, review of implementation of the strategy for resource mobilization and the roadmap. Particular attention will be given to the different ways of assessing the value of biodiversity and ecosystem services and the mechanisms to integrate these values into decision-making.

CBD LifeWeb Initiative Launches Zero Extinction Campaign [viewed]

LifeWeb13 November 2013: Launched by the LifeWeb Initiative of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and officially unveiled at the seventeenth meeting of the CBD Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA), the Zero Extinction Campaign aims to provide countries with a platform to profile their financial needs to prevent species extinctions and achieve related Aichi targets in the effort to stem biodiversity loss.

CBD Secretariat Invites Parties' Submissions on Geo-Engineering-Related Measures [viewed]

CBD12 November 2013: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has invited parties to submit information on any measures they have undertaken to ensure that no climate-related geo-engineering activities that may affect biodiversity take place, and to address the exception for small-scale scientific research studies contained in CBD Decision X/33, subparagraph 8(w) on geo-engineering.

Event: Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group Meeting on Socio-economic Considerations [viewed]

Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), this meeting is part of the intersessional process on socio-economic considerations arising from the impact of living modified organisms (LMOs) on the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity, as addressed by Article 26 of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. The meeting will examine the outcomes of a series of online forums and regional online conferences and a compilation and review of information on socio-economic considerations. It aims to develop conceptual clarity on socio-economic considerations. The meeting report will be submitted for consideration by the seventh meeting of the Protocol's Meeting of the Parties (COP-MOP 7).

GEF Council Approves US$259.84 Million Work Program [viewed]

45th-meeting-of-the-GEF-Council7 November 2013: The 45th meeting of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council considered, inter alia: the progress report on the pilot accreditation of GEF Project Agencies; the mid-term evaluation of the System for Transparent Allocation of Resources (STAR); the mid-term evaluation of the National Portfolio Formulation Exercise (NPFE); an update on the GEF-6 replenishment; a review of GEF Agencies on their application of environmental and social safeguards and gender mainstreaming; and an update on the development of the GEF 2020 strategy. The GEF Council also approved a Work Program amounting to US$259.84 million.

Austria Provides US$2.2 Million through CBD LifeWeb Initiative [viewed]

LifeWeb31 October 2013: The Government of Austria has approved funding of US$2.2 million through the LifeWeb Initiative to help implement the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) through projects in Bangladesh, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia and the Lao People's Democratic Republic.
