ITPGR Celebrates 10 Years of Entry Into Force [viewed]

ITPGR3 July 2014: On 3 July 2014, in Geneva, Switzerland, the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR) celebrated its 10th birthday since its entry into force on 29 June 2004. The event aimed to highlight the Treaty's role in ensuring global food security, farmers' rights, sustainable agriculture, and fair and equitable benefit-sharing arising from the use of plant genetic resources.

Event: CBD Expert Workshop on Practical Guidance for Marine Spatial Planning [viewed]

Hosted by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), this expert workshop aims to provide consolidated practical guidance and a toolkit for marine spatial planning. Aiming to respond to the request of the CBD Conference of the Parties (COP) for the development of a web-based information-sharing system linking existing information sources on marine spatial planning, the workshop will review submissions on scientific and technical information, case studies, tools and guidance, and relevant management plans related to marine spatial planning.

Event: CBD Workshop on Synergies between REDD+ and Ecosystem Conservation and Restoration in NBSAPs [viewed]

Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), in collaboration with the UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) and the Central African Forest Commission (COMIFAC), this workshop aims to support Central African countries in: the development of national targets and plans for ecosystem conservation and restoration within the framework of the Aichi targets; integrating targets, as well as REDD+ actions, into updated national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs); and demonstrating the appropriate data-gathering processes, assessments, policies and tools for implementing a coherent approach to targets and REDD+ actions.

ABS Protocol Reaches 42 Ratifications [viewed]

Cbd Logo1 July 2014: The European Union (EU), Namibia and Samoa ratified the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS) in May 2014, followed by Belarus, Guatemala, Spain and Uganda, which ratified in June 2014, and Vanuatu, which ratified on 1 July 2014, bringing the total number of ratifications to 42.

SBSTTA-18 Adopts Recommendations on Scientific Issues Related to Aichi Targets Implementation [viewed]

Chair-Hem-Pande28 June 2014: The 18th meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) addressed a series of items related to the scientific base required for the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and its Aichi biodiversity targets, including the fourth edition of the Global Biodiversity Outlook (GBO-4), marine- and climate-related issues, and invasive alien species (IAS).

Pacific Countries Announce Financial Contributions to Address IAS [viewed]

SPREP23 June 2014: Palau and Tonga have both announced financial commitments to address invasive alien species (IAS). These commitments will contribute to a Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) regional project on IAS, including the development and implementation of National Invasive Species Strategy and Action Plans (NISSAPs) in Pacific countries.
