Vanuatu Signs Sharks MoU [viewed]

20 February 2013: The Secretariat of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) has announced that Vanuatu has joined the Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation of Migratory Sharks (Sharks MoU) as its 26th Signatory. Vanuatu signed the MoU in the Philippines on 19 February 2013.

Event: Asia-Pacific Regional Training Workshop on Public Awareness, Education and Participation Concerning the Safe Transfer, Handling and Use of LMOs [viewed]

Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), this regional training workshop for Asia-Pacific will discuss concepts, tools and instruments for sharing experiences and lessons learned, as well as strategies for enhancing regional and subregional cooperation on the implementation of the programme of work. The workshop will also raise awareness of the Nagoya–Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress and discuss its ratification and implementation. Parties are invited to nominate participants by 22 February 2013.

Event: Second African Workshop for LDCs on National Reports, GBO-4 and Scenarios for Regional Policy [viewed]

Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), with financial support from Japan, the Netherlands and Cameroon, this Francophone workshop aims to build national capacities for the preparation and timely submission of the fifth national report under the CBD, in particular for analyzing the status and trends of biodiversity, the development of national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs), and progress towards achieving the Aichi targets and related national targets.

Event: World Day to Combat Desertification 2013 [viewed]

The 2013 annual World Day to Combat Desertification will focus on the slogan “Don't let our future dry up.” The day is celebrated on 17 June, to mark the conclusion of negotiations on the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). This year's theme of drought and water scarcity takes into account that 2013 is also the International Year of Water Cooperation. World Day to Combat Desertification 2013 will seek to create awareness about the risks of drought and water scarcity in the drylands and beyond, and to call attention to the importance of sustaining healthy soils as part of the post-Rio+20 agenda and post-2015 development agenda.

General Assembly Launches International Year of Quinoa [viewed]

20 February 2013: The UN General Assembly launched the International Year of Quinoa with a High-Level Panel discussion during its plenary at UN Headquarters in New York. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Bolivian President Evo Morales and First Lady of Peru Nadine Heredia participated in the launch, which will be celebrated under the theme "A future sown thousands of years ago."

CBD Secretariat Outlines Intersessional Activities on ABS [viewed]

CBD7 February 2013: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has issued two notifications related to intersessional activities on the Nagoya Protocol on access and benefit-sharing (ABS) and related developments: one outlining activities to be undertaken in the biennium 2013-2014, with information to be submitted in preparation for the third meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Nagoya Protocol (ICNP), and invitations for direct actions by governments and relevant organizations in accordance with Decision XI/1 on the status of the Nagoya Protocol; and another addressing Article 10 of the Nagoya Protocol on a global multilateral benefit-sharing mechanism and announcing an online consultation through discussion groups, tentatively scheduled to begin on 8 April 2013.

Event: Caribbean Subregional Workshop on Capacity-building for the Effective Implementation of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety [viewed]
