ABS Protocol Signing Ceremony Adds New Signatories [viewed]

CBD20 September 2011: The number of signatories to the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has reached 54, following a number of additions during a signing ceremony held on the margins of the opening of the 66th Session of the UN General Assembly at UN Headquarters, New York, US, on 20 September 2011.

Rio Conventions Joint Liaison Group Agrees on Terms of Reference and Modus Operandi [viewed]

20 September 2011: The Executive Secretaries of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) have reported the adoption of the terms of reference and modus operandi for the Joint Liaison Group of the Rio Conventions.

Ramsar, CBD Finalize Joint Work Plan [viewed]

19 September 2011: A new work programme between the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention) has been finalized, following an official visit to the CBD Secretariat in Montreal, Canada by Anada Tiéga, Secretary-General of the Ramsar Convention. The work plan will be submitted to their respective Conferences of the Parties (COPs) in 2012.

Event: CBD Third Expert Workshop on the City Biodiversity Index (Singapore Index) and Meeting on CBO I [viewed]

This expert workshop is organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Government of Singapore, represented by its National Parks Board (NParks), from 11-12 October 2011. It will be followed, on 13 October, by a meeting on the City Biodiversity Outlook 1 (CBO I). The expert workshop will allow participants to report on their experiences in using the Index and to work together on the finalization of the tool. The CBO I meeting will focus on the production plan and content development, key messages and on how to integrate the Singapore Index in the CBO 1 – synthesis.

Event: Progress Meeting of the European Space Agency's “GlobWetland-II” Project Team [viewed]

The European Space Agency's “GlobWetland-II” project is developing remote sensing products and in-country capacity building for handling Earth observation data for a number of Mediterranean States that are parties to the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention), focusing on North Africa and the Middle East. The overarching objective of the GlobWetland II project is to contribute to the set up of a Global Wetlands Observing System (G-WOS) as per the strategy 1.2 of the Ramsar Strategic Plan 2009-2015, Resolution X.1, adopted at the 10th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 10) of the Ramsar Convention, in Changwon, South Korea. This progress meeting is hosted by the Ramsar Secretariat.

Task Force Established to Promote Implementation of Aichi Biodiversity Targets [viewed]

CBD21 September 2011: A Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) was signed between the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and 27 international agencies, organizations and environmental conventions, aiming to achieve and implement the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and its Aichi Biodiversity Targets.

UNEP/CMS Thesis Award Given for Research on African Elephants' Response to Honey Bees [viewed]

20 September 2011: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP)/Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) Thesis Award 2011 has been given to Dr Lucy E. King, a biologist from the UK. Her PhD thesis on “The interaction between the African elephant (Loxodonta africana africana) and the African honeybee (Apis mellifera scutellata) and its potential application as an elephant deterrent” was one of 60 submitted.

UNGA High Level Event on Desertification Provides Input to COP 10 and UNCSD [viewed]

20 September 2011: Prior to the opening of the 66th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), the UNGA convened a High-level Meeting on addressing desertification, land degradation and drought in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication. The outcome of the deliberations will feed into the 10th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 10) to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).
