Event: Land Day 5 [viewed]

The theme of Land Day 5 is "Achieving Zero Net Land Degradation: Impacts on Climate Change Issues." This "Day" will be convened in parallel to the Durban Climate Change Conference as part of the Rio Conventions Pavilion. Panel discussions will consider the following questions: can the world afford not to go land degradation neutral?; how will land degradation neutrality impact climate change issues such as adaptation, mitigation, and resilience building?; and potential contribution of ‘zero net land degradation target' in driving the synergy agenda at all levels: best practices and successful case studies. Organizers include the UNCCD Secretariat and ICRAF.

ICID+19 Develops Declaration of Niamey on Drylands [viewed]

October 2011: Approximately one hundred participants, scientists and policymakers from Africa, Brazil, Argentina and France, as well as representatives from international organizations, met in Niamey, Niger, from 24-25 October 2011, at the “Fight Against Desertification in Africa” conference, also known as ICID+19 Africa.

Tablet Computer Programme Reduces Paper Consumption during UNCCD COP 10 [viewed]

21 October 2011: During the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP 10), which took place in Gyeongnam Province, Republic of Korea, the UNCCD Secretariat partnered with the provincial government and SK Telecom to loan 1000 Android-based Samsung Galaxy Tablet personal computers to conference participants. The tablets permitted easy access to official documents and the daily journal along with a variety of other material.

UNCCD COP 10 Adopts Decisions on GM Governance, Scientific Advice and Indicators [viewed]

21 October 2011: Delegates at the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP 10), which convened from 10-21 October 2011, in Changwon City, Republic of Korea, adopted 40 decisions, including on addressing the governance of the Convention's Global Mechanism (GM), scientific advice, and performance and impact indicators.

Arab League Meeting Focuses on Biodiversity and Desertification MEAs [viewed]
