Event: Land Day 5 [viewed]
The theme of Land Day 5 is "Achieving Zero Net Land Degradation: Impacts on Climate Change Issues." This "Day" will be convened in parallel to the Durban Climate Change Conference as part of the Rio Conventions Pavilion. Panel discussions will consider the following questions: can the world afford not to go land degradation neutral?; how will land degradation neutrality impact climate change issues such as adaptation, mitigation, and resilience building?; and potential contribution of ‘zero net land degradation target' in driving the synergy agenda at all levels: best practices and successful case studies. Organizers include the UNCCD Secretariat and ICRAF.
October 2011: Approximately one hundred participants, scientists and policymakers from Africa, Brazil, Argentina and France, as well as representatives from international organizations, met in Niamey, Niger, from 24-25 October 2011, at the “Fight Against Desertification in Africa” conference, also known as ICID+19 Africa. 
October 2011: The third issue of Satoyama, a newsletter published by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), includes several articles authored by high-level officials on issues including the UN Decade on Biodiversity, green growth and regional and national action for biodiversity.
21 October 2011: During the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP 10), which took place in Gyeongnam Province, Republic of Korea, the UNCCD Secretariat partnered with the provincial government and SK Telecom to loan 1000 Android-based Samsung Galaxy Tablet personal computers to conference participants. The tablets permitted easy access to official documents and the daily journal along with a variety of other material. 
21 October 2011: Delegates at the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP 10), which convened from 10-21 October 2011, in Changwon City, Republic of Korea, adopted 40 decisions, including on addressing the governance of the Convention's Global Mechanism (GM), scientific advice, and performance and impact indicators. 
20 October 2011: The Rio Conventions Pavilion was organized during the 10th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), to showcase actions to stop land degradation and save biodiversity while meeting the challenges of climate change.
17 October 2011: The Global Environment Facility (GEF), acting for the first time as a financial mechanism to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), is participating in a series of events at the 10th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 10), taking place in Changwon, Republic of Korea, from 10-21 October 2011.
20 October 2011: The report "Global Drylands: A UN System-wide Response," which was prepared by 18 UN agencies through the Environment Management Group (EMG), was launched during a side event at the tenth session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP 10).
17 October 2011: The first day of the High-level Segment for 10th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 10) to the Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) included a roundtable discussion focused on the theme “The UNCCD in the context of Rio+20: Addressing desertification, land degradation and drought as a cornerstone of the Green Economy.” 
11 October 2011: The Secretariat of the League of Arab States organized the meeting of the "Arab Working Group on the implementation of biodiversity and desertification related Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs)," at which representatives of Arab countries heard reports from the various MEAs on their work over the past year relevant to the Arab region.
