10 May 2013: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published a report on the technical workshop on ecosystem-based approaches for adaptation to climate change (FCC/SBSTA/2013/2), which was held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, from 21-23 March 2013. The workshop sought to enhance parties' and expert organizations' understanding of ecosystem-based approaches for adaptation, share best practices and lessons learned, and identify areas for further work.

26 April 2013: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released a compilation of 11 views presented by parties (FCCC/SB/2013/MISC.3) on issues related to activities described in paragraph 70 of decision 1/CP.16 (Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries- REDD+). Three submissions from NGOs were posted on the UNFCCC website.

23 March 2013: Representatives from non-governmental organizations (NGOs), governments and the private sector met at the UNFCCC Technical Workshop on Ecosystem-based Approaches (EbA) for Adaptation to Climate Change. Addressing participants, UNFCCC Deputy Executive Secretary Richard Kinley provided an update on recent developments in the intergovernmental process on climate change, and highlighted relevant aspects relating to the work on adaptation to climate change.

14 March 2013: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has completed a three-day Expanded Capacity Workshop (ECW) for the West African Sahel, bringing together focal points from the GEF, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), and the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs).

Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), with a financial contribution from the Government of Japan, this workshop is being held back-to-back with the technical workshop organized by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) on ecosystem-based approaches for adaptation to climate change under the Nairobi Work Programme on impacts, vulnerability and adaptation to climate change, held from 21-23 March 2013, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The workshop will support the update and/or implementation of National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans (NBSAP) and the development of national climate change adaptation plans.

The event will bring together focal points from the GEF, UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), with representatives from civil society, the GEF Secretariat, and the GEF Agencies. The event will include exercises on national capacity development (NCSA), results-based management, monitoring and evaluation, synergies in project design, as well as discussions on the GEF 2020 Strategy, the new GEF Fee Policy, and Project Cycle harmonization. The registration deadline for civil society participants is 17 February 2013.

6 February 2013: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is collaborating with the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to include participation of biodiversity experts in the upcoming regional training workshop on adaptation for Francophone Least Developed Countries (LDCs) of the Least Developed Countries Expert Group (LEG), established by the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UNFCCC.

The second session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action (ADP) will be held in Bonn, Germany, from 29 April-3 May 2013. The ADP will meet in accordance with the ADP conclusions adopted at the Climate Change Conference held in December 2012, in Doha, Qatar. Workstream 1 discussions are expected to continue addressing the 2015 agreement, including its scope, structure and design, as well as the application of the Climate Change Convention principles. Workstream 2 is expected to address the pre-2020 ambition, which may include discussions on mitigation and adaptation benefits to the impacts of climate change, finance and capacity building to support implementation of the Convention.
