Event: Seventh Session of the CGRFA Working Group on PGRFA [viewed]

FAO Guide Aims to Improve Emergency Response in Fisheries and Aquaculture Sectors [viewed]

FAOJune 2014: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has released a report, titled ‘Fisheries and aquaculture emergency response guidance,' which draws on lessons learned during responses to disasters that affected the fisheries and aquaculture sectors. The guide aims to save the lives and livelihoods of people affected by disasters, climate change and human activity-related hazards, and humanitarian emergencies in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors.

Common Oceans Programme Addresses Fisheries Management and Biodiversity Conservation in ABNJ [viewed]

FAO-Common-OceansJune 2014: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has released a publication, titled ‘Common Oceans: Global Sustainable Fisheries Management and Biodiversity Conservation in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction.' The report introduces the Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ) Program, which focuses on tuna, deep-sea fisheries and biodiversity conservation.

FAO Publishes First Global Assessment of Forest Genetic Resources [viewed]

FAO3 June 2014: For the first time, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has conducted a global assessment of forest genetic resources. ‘The State of the World's Forest Genetic Resources' is based on reports from 86 countries and encompasses approximately 85% of global forest cover.

FAO Supports Identification of Deep-Sea Species [viewed]

FAO28 May 2014: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has released the first in a series of guides meant to assist with the identification and reporting of deep-sea by-catch, especially in regard to sharks, rays, skates, chimaeras and cold water corals. The first manual in the series focuses on cartilaginous species in the Indian Ocean.

FAO State of the World Fisheries and Aquaculture Highlights Growing Fish Production and Consumption [viewed]

FAO19 May 2014: Fisheries and aquaculture are playing an increasing role in feeding the world and provide livelihoods for over 10% of the global population, according to the ‘State of the World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2014.' However, the report, produced by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), cautions that illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing continues to threaten marine ecosystems as well as local economies, food supplies and livelihoods.

IPBES Interim MEP Report Calls for Improved Member Selection [viewed]

ipbes9 May 2014: The Plenary of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), through Decision IPBES-2/2 (para 3), requested that the interim Multidisciplinary Expert Panel (MEP) prepare a report by June 2014, reflecting on “the lessons learned with regards to its functioning and how to improve it.” The report, now published, highlights nine lessons learned.

WorldFish, FAO and Earth Observatory of Singapore Will Produce Roadmap for Future of Fish [viewed]

fao-worldfish28 April 2014: The Government of the Netherlands and the Rockefeller Foundation have announced their support for a partnership between the WorldFish Center and the Earth Observatory of Singapore. The two organizations will collaborate with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) to produce a roadmap for the "Future of Fish."
