SIDS Conference Generates Partnerships to Conserve and Manage Pacific Ocean Resources [viewed]

Samoa Partnerships Commitment4 September 2014: The Third International Conference on Small Island developing States (SIDS) generated financial commitments of US$1.9 billion across nearly 300 partnerships, many of which focus on oceans and biodiversity. APEC Ministers Call for Action on Blue Economy, Food Security, Marine Conservation and Disaster Resilience [viewed]

apec28 August 2014: In an outcome document agreed upon at a meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Ocean and Fisheries Working Group, APEC Ministers called for establishing more integrated, sustainable, inclusive and mutually beneficial partnerships on ocean cooperation among APEC members. The ‘Xiamen Declaration: Towards New Partnership through Ocean Cooperation in the Asia-Pacific Region' outlines 47 actions on four priority areas: coastal and marine ecosystem conservation and disaster resilience; the role of the ocean on food security and food-related trade; marine science, technology and innovation; and the blue economy.

UNEP and Norway Sign Agreement on GRID-Arendal's 25th Anniversary [viewed]

UNEP GRID Arendal14 August 2014: On the occasion of GRID-Arendal's 25th anniversary, UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Executive Director, Achim Steiner, and Olav Orheim, Chairman of the Board of Directors of GRID-Arendal, signed a Programme Cooperation Agreement in which Norway renewed its contribution to UNEP's Programme of Work for 2014. The Agreement includes a commitment of US$16 million to UNEP, including US$1 million to support action on marine plastic debris and microplastics and US$500,000 to improve fish food security in West Africa.

Event: International Mountain Day 2014 [viewed]

Organized under the theme 'Mountain Farming,' the 2014 International Mountain Day will focus on highlighting the rapid transformation of family farming in mountain regions driven by population growth and economic globalization, among other factors. The Day is meant to provide opportunities to: raise awareness on the importance of mountains to life; highlight opportunities and constraints in mountain development; and build partnerships for positive change in mountains and highlands, globally. Coordinated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the Day will also constitute one of the concluding events of the 2014 International Year of Family Farming and link to relevant FAO publications and programmes.

UNECE, UNEP and FAO Consider Forest PES within a Green Economy [viewed]
