Event: Panel Discussion in Advance of the Second Plenary Session of the IPBES [viewed]

Sponsored by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), this event will seek to increase awareness about the Intergovernmental Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) and to bring participants up-to-date on the issues that will be addressed in the Second IPBES Plenary. Presentations will include an overview of the intersessional activities that have taken place in 2013, and some of the key issues that will be addressed in the Second Plenary, including the Stakeholder Engagement Strategy and some of the thematic and methodological assessments that have been proposed as priorities for the IPBES Work Programme 2014-2018.

Event: IPBES Asia-Pacific Regional Consultation Meeting [viewed]

The Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) Asia-Pacific consultation meeting is organized by the Malaysia Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT) and Office of the Science Advisor, and supported by the Norwegian Environment Agency, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE)-the Government of Malaysia, and the UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC). Meeting objectives are to provide an opportunity to discuss and consider regional perspectives for the IPBES Work Programme 2014-2018 as well as other issues of the IPBES-2 agenda, including procedures and approaches for working with different knowledge systems and the IPBES conceptual framework.

Event: Informal Consultation on IPBES and Capacity Building [viewed]

This meeting will be held back-to-back with the 'High level Forum on Biodiversity and Development for Post-2015,' and aims to build further understanding and a convergence of views on how capacity building could and should be addressed in the context of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). Event: 15th Regular Session of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture [viewed]

The 15th Regular Session of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA 15) is expected to convene in 2015. The Commission provides the only permanent forum for governments to discuss and negotiate matters specifically relevant to biological diversity for food and agriculture. The Commission aims to reach international consensus on policies for the sustainable use and conservation of genetic resources for food and agriculture and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits derived from their use.

Brazzaville Declaration to Address Illegal Timber Trade [viewed]

FAO23 October 2013: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has announced the adoption of the Brazzaville Declaration to combat illegal timber trade in the Congo Basin. The Declaration was agreed to by government representatives, civil society and timber industry representatives at the Forum International sur le Développement Durable de la Filière Bois dans le bassin du Congo.

FAO Initiates Preparation of Second Report on World's Animal Genetic Resources [viewed]

Event: World Soil Day 2013 [viewed]

Recognizing the importance of soils, the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS), in 2002, agreed on a resolution proposing that the 5th of December be celebrated as World Soil Day. This day celebrates the importance of soil as a critical component of the natural system and as a vital contributor to human wellbeing. Under the leadership of Thailand and within the framework of the Global Soil Partnership (GSP), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has supported the formal establishment of a global awareness raising platform such as the World Soil Day. The FAO Conference in June 2013 unanimously endorsed World Soil Day and requested the 68th UN General Assembly to have it officially adopted. The 38th meeting of the FAO Conference, following consideration of proposals endorsed by the FAO Council at its 145th and 146th sessions to observe 5 December as World Soil Day and to declare 2015 as International Year of Soils with the objective of raising awareness of the importance of soils for food security, essential eco-system functions and sustainable development, adopted resolutions 4/2013 and 5/2013 endorsing the events.
