2 November 2012: The 34th Consultative Meeting of States parties to the Convention on the Prevention of Marine Pollution by Dumping of Wastes and Other Matter, 1972 (London Convention), and to its 1996 Protocol (London Protocol), concluded with the release of an unanimous statement of concern regarding a reported incident of deliberate ocean fertilization activity off the west coast of Canada.
9 October 2012: The 64th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) addressed issues related to energy efficiency, ballast water management and ship-recycling. The session also led to the establishment of a new Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA) in the Saba Bank, in the north-eastern Caribbean area of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will meet for its 64th session in London, UK, from 1-5 October 2012. Among other items, the MEPC will consider: matters relating to the implementation of energy efficiency, ballast water management and ship-recycling regulations; the designation of a Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA) in the North-eastern Caribbean area of the Kingdom of the Netherlands; market-based measures to address the reduction of greenhouse gases (GHGs); the availability of fuel oil to meet air pollution requirements; guidelines for the recycling of ships; and sewage treatment plant guidelines.
30 August 2012: The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), together with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and Australia's Maritime Safety Authority, convened a workshop on Particularly Sensitive Sea Areas (PSSAs). The meeting aimed to assist in increasing protection of marine environments by building the capacity of Pacific Island nation representatives from the maritime and environment sectors to develop proposals for PSSAs.
12 May 2012: The UN Pavilion has opened at the International Exposition 2012 (Expo 2012) in Yeosu, Republic of Korea, under the theme "Oceans and Coasts: Connecting Our Lives, Ensuring Our Future—The Choice is Yours." The Expo is the first international exposition focusing on ocean, coasts and islands in international recognition of their role, and is organized around the overall theme "The Living Ocean and Coast: Diversity of Resources and Sustainable Activities."
19 April 2012: Briefing number 12 of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) highlights the new amendments adopted at the IMO Committee's session in London to increase the limits of liability in the 1996 Protocol to the Convention on Limitation of Liability for Maritime Claims (LLMC).
2 March 2012: The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted a series of guidelines to support the uniform implementation of mandatory measures to increase energy efficiency and reduce emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) from international shipping.
Market-based measures to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from international shipping will be among the agenda items discussed by the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), when it meets for its 63rd session. The MEPC will also discuss issues relating to the implementation of the ship recycling and ballast water management conventions, and consider the adoption of amendments to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) relating to reception facilities in small island developing States.
February 2012: The fourth issue of Satoyama, a newsletter published by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), contains articles by Heads of State and leaders of international organizations, as well as senior officials. The authors highlight, inter alia: the importance of biodiversity in the sustainable development agenda; human-influenced forces behind biodiversity loss; and collaborations between environmental organizations.
26 January: A panel on Oceans held at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, was moderated by John Micklethwait, Editor-in-Chief of The Economist, addressed pressing challenges facing oceans in light of more than 1.5 billion people counting on fish for their daily protein source.
