22 May 2013: 'Water and Biodiversity' was the theme for this year's International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB), celebrated on 22 May, to coincide with the UN designation of 2013 as the International Year of Water Cooperation.
22 March 2013: This year's edition of World Water Day, celebrated on 22 March, was organized around the theme of water cooperation and within the framework of the International Year of Water Cooperation. The Day's celebrations were coordinated by UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in collaboration with the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), for UN-Water.
Reflecting the decision to designate 2013 as the International Year of Water Cooperation, World Water Day 2013 will be dedicated to the theme of water cooperation.
The UN International Year of Water Cooperation will be observed in 2013. The campaign will work to advance comprehension of the challenges and benefits of water cooperation, and promote it worldwide. UN-Water has called upon the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to lead the International Year. The 2013 World Water Day, marked on 22 March, also will be dedicated to water cooperation.
21 June 2012: The UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and UN-Water have released a report on water and the green economy in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The report draws on presentations and discussions held during the LAC sessions of the International Conference "Water in the Green Economy in Practice: Towards Rio+20," held from 3-5 October 2011, in Zaragoza, Spain.
The objective of World Water Day 2011 is to focus international attention on the impact of rapid urban population growth, industrialization and uncertainties caused by climate change, conflicts and natural disasters on urban water systems. This year's theme, "Water for cities: responding to the urban challenge," aims to spotlight and encourage governments, organizations, communities, and individuals to actively engage in addressing the defy of urban water management.
The eleventh Special Session of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum (GCSS-11/GMEF) convened from 24-26 February 2010, in Bali, Indonesia.
Organized in the framework of the International Year of Biodiversity (IYB), the UNESCO Biodiversity Science Policy Conference was held from 25-29 January 2010, at UNESCO headquarters, in Paris, France, immediately following the high-level launch of IYB in Paris from 21-22 January 2010.
