UNDP and Government of Japan Launch Second Phase of Satoyama Initiative Project [viewed]

UNDP27 June 2013: The UN Development Programme (UNDP), together with the Government of Japan, have announced the second phase of the Community Development and Knowledge Management for the Satoyama Initiative (COMDEKS), which includes new initiatives in Bhutan, Cameroon, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Kyrgyzstan, Indonesia, Mongolia, Namibia, and Niger. The Programme promotes inclusive, community-based approaches to the sustainable development of landscapes and seascapes, through support for biodiversity conservation, human security, disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation.

Event: Expert Workshop on the Conceptual Framework for IPBES [viewed]

An international expert workshop on the conceptual framework for the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) will be convened by the IPBES Multidisciplinary Expert Panel (MEP) and co-hosted by the Governments of South Africa and the UK, with additional support from the Government of Japan. The goal of the workshop is to share among the experts and the stakeholders work to-date on and to provide inputs to the development of a draft conceptual framework for the Platform. The outcome of this workshop will form the basis of a recommendation by the MEP of a conceptual framework for adoption by the Plenary at its second session scheduled to take place in Antalya, Turkey, from 9-16 December 2013.

UN Poverty-Environment Initiative Deepens Efforts on Gender, Equality and Stakeholder Partnerships [viewed]

Event: IPBES LAC Regional Consultation Meeting [viewed]

This Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) meeting is co-hosted by the Regional Office For Latin America and the Caribbean of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Sao Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP). The objectives of the meeting are to: strengthen and focus regional inputs to the IPBES Work Programme 2014-2018; strengthen regional participation in the IBPES intersessional process on other elements of the Platform; develop an active network of institutions contributing to IPBES work and related capacity building in Latin America and the Caribbean; and identify possible partnerships between Institutions and/or Governments to strengthen sub-regional and regional biodiversity and ecosystems services assessments, as well as knowledge generation, within the IPBES framework.

Trondheim Conference Focuses on Biodiversity Mainstreaming [viewed]

Trondheim Conference on Biodiversity31 May 2013: Hosted by the Norwegian Government in cooperation with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the World Bank, the seventh Trondheim Conference on Biodiversity was held from 27-31 May 2013, in Trondheim, Norway, under the title 'Ecology and Economy for a Sustainable Society.'

UNDP Reports on Environment and Sustainable Development Work in 2008-2012 [viewed]

The publication features a collection of stories from around the world in four strategic areas: mainstreaming environment and energy; mobilizing environmental finance; promoting adaptation to climate change; and expanding access to environmental and energy services for the poor.

Event: International Expert and Stakeholder Workshop on the Contribution of Indigenous and Local Knowledge Systems to IPBES [viewed]

The International Expert and Stakeholder Workshop on the Contribution of Indigenous and Local Knowledge Systems to IPBES: Building Synergies with Science will be convened by the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) Multidisciplinary Expert Panel and hosted by the Ministry of Environment, Japan. It is being co-organised by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the UN University (UNU). The objectives of the workshop are to examine and identify procedures and approaches for working with indigenous and local knowledge systems in the framework of IPBES; and to review and assess possible conceptual frameworks for the work of IPBES that are based on or accommodate indigenous and local knowledge systems and worldviews. The workshop is part of the on-going intersessional process leading up to the second session of the Platform's Plenary (IPBES-2), where the outcomes of this workshop will be presented for further consideration.

Event: IPBES First Full MEP and Bureau Meeting [viewed]

The Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) will hold the first 'Full Members of the Platform (MEP) and Bureau meeting' to implement Decision IPBES/1/2 on next steps for the development of the initial IPBES work programme, as requested by the IPBES Plenary at its first session. The meeting will be hosted by the Norwegian Directorate for Nature Management.

UNDP, TNC Event Discusses Role of Environmental Sustainability, Community-based Action in Post-2015 Agenda [viewed]
