Pacific Mangroves Initiative Works Towards Declaration at SIDS Conference [viewed]

iucn-sprep1 July 2014: The Pacific Mangroves Initiative has developed a mangroves declaration, which is expected to be signed by Environment Ministers from Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu at the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The declaration is expected to emphasize mangroves as key coastal ecosystems that need conservation and to formalize regional cooperation on their conservation and sustainable use.

Event: Third Session of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) Plenary [viewed]

The third session of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) plenary will review progress made on the adopted IPBES work programme for 2014 – 2018, including the related budget and institutional arrangements for its implementation. In addition, the third session of the IPBES plenary will select the members of the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel (MEP) based on the nominations received from governments. The event will be preceded by consultations and a stakeholder day on 10-11 January.

UN Report Highlights MDG Targets Within Reach [viewed]

The report provides updates on progress toward fulfilling the MDGs and their targets at global and regional levels. Initiative in East Africa Launched to Address Illegal Logging and Timber Trade [viewed]

UNDP and Kenya Launch Project to Halt Elephant Poaching [viewed]

undp-kenya25 June 2014: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with the first lady of Kenya, Margaret Kenyatta, launched a wildlife conservancy programme to address poaching in Amboseli, an 8,000 square-kilometer natural reserve spanning the border between Kenya and Tanzania. The project targets communities on the margins of the national park, aiming to provide them with alternatives to killing wildlife.

IPBES Offers Draft Guidance on Regional and Sub-Regional Assessments [viewed]

ipbes19 June 2014: The Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has released the first draft of a guidance document addressing the scoping of IPBES deliverable 2b, on regional and sub-regional assessments. The draft guidance is being circulated to member States and observers for comments to assist the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel (MEP) and Bureau with its finalization.
