WAVES Country and Annual Reports Released [viewed]

wavesMay 2014: The Wealth Accounting and the Valuation of Ecosystem Services (WAVES) Partnership has released its ‘Annual Report 2014,' which documents the Partnership's methodological and institutional progress on natural capital accounting (NCA) for integrating natural resources into development planning. WAVES has also released country reports for five of its eight core implementing countries: Botswana, Colombia, Costa Rica, Madagascar, and the Philippines.

Australia, Indonesia and Timor-Leste Endorse Marine Action Programme [viewed]

GEF15 May 2014: Ministers from Timor-Leste and Indonesia and the Australian Ambassador to Indonesia endorsed a regional Strategic Action Programme to promote the restoration, conservation and management of coastal and marine ecosystems in the Arafura and Timor Seas, an area that links the Indian and Pacific Oceans and is known as the ATS region. The officials endorsed the Programme at the World Coral Reef Conference 2014, which took place from 14-17 May in Manadao, Indonesia.

IPBES Interim MEP Report Calls for Improved Member Selection [viewed]

ipbes9 May 2014: The Plenary of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), through Decision IPBES-2/2 (para 3), requested that the interim Multidisciplinary Expert Panel (MEP) prepare a report by June 2014, reflecting on “the lessons learned with regards to its functioning and how to improve it.” The report, now published, highlights nine lessons learned.

Event: CBD Workshop on Resource Mobilization for Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia [viewed]

This workshop is organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the UN Development Programme (UNDP) through its Biodiversity Finance Initiative, and the UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC). As one of a series of resource mobilization workshops, it will enhance the capacity of participants to apply pertinent methodologies, frameworks and tools for identifying, assessing and reporting on existing biodiversity finance, in order to develop robust financial baselines and national finance plans for effective implementation of national biodiversity strategies and action plans; and to identify relevant biodiversity values and incorporate them in policy planning.

GESMAP Updates Ballast Water Methodology [viewed]

15 April 2014: The Joint Group of Experts on the Scientific Aspects of Marine Environmental Protection (GESMAP) Ballast Water Working Group has updated its Methodology for conducting its work and gathering information. The 66th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) endorsed the revised Methodology (BWM.2/Circ.13.Rev.1) and agreed it should be applied to all submissions for Basic Approval of Ballast Water Management (BWM) systems.

Event: CBD Workshop for Asia and the Pacific on Resource Mobilization [viewed]

This workshop is one of a series of regional workshops to support parties in the establishment of robust baselines and reporting frameworks, and the preparation of national financial plans for biodiversity. Its emphasis will be on exchange of national experiences and active learning, and the step-by-step development of individualized and prioritized action plans towards the development of national finance plans. It is organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and the UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC).

Event: CBD High-level Panel on the Global Assessment of Resources and Latin America Workshop on Resource Mobilization [viewed]

Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the third meeting of the second phase of the High-level Panel on the Global Assessment of Resources for Implementing the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 will be held from 14-15 April 2014. This High-level Panel was constituted in 2013, with 15 expert members from all regions, with a mandate to assess the benefits of meeting the Aichi Biodiversity Targets by examining both the positive impacts on biodiversity directly and the wider benefits to society that result from the investments and policy developments required. The meeting will be followed by the regional workshop for Latin America and the Caribbean on resource mobilization, to be held from 15-17 April. The workshop is organized by the CBD Secretariat in cooperation with the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC). Its immediate objective and output is to support the development, in accordance with national circumstances, of individualized and prioritized action plans towards the development of national finance plans.
