12 June 2013: The UN Poverty-Environment Initiative (PEI) launched its 2013-2017 programme, announcing that its new phase will consolidate current programme achievements, further integrate gender and equality concerns, and strengthen stakeholder partnerships for the long-term mainstreaming of poverty-environment issues.
14 June 2013: The Fourth Session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee for a Legally-Binding Agreement on Forests in Europe (INC-Forests4) made substantial progress in revising the draft negotiating text of a forest convention, but decided to suspend work until autumn because it had run out of time to conclude a few key issues in the text, reach consensus on institutional issues and prepare the interim arrangements for the convention.
5 June 2013: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) have launched 'A toolkit to support conservation by indigenous peoples and local communities,' which highlights community approaches to the conservation of Indigenous Peoples' and Community Conserved Territories and Areas (ICCAs).
5 June 2013: Commemorated annually on 5 June since 1972, this year's World Environment Day (WED) was celebrated around the theme, 'Think.Eat.Save - Reduce Your Foodprint,' and highlighted the importance of achieving a sustainable food future through a reduction in food waste. This year's celebrations were hosted by Mongolia, with thousands of activities taking place worldwide.
This conference will be held around the theme 'Harnessing Ecosystem Based Approaches for Food Security and Adaptation to Climate Change in Africa'. It is convened by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and other UN agencies, governments, research institution, NGOs, scholars, donors, and local governments. The event will consist of a combination of plenary and panel group discussions, which will provide a platform for participants to interact and learn about the latest ideas and practices in harnessing ecosystems services for food security and climate change adaptation.
This Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) meeting is co-hosted by the Regional Office For Latin America and the Caribbean of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Sao Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP). The objectives of the meeting are to: strengthen and focus regional inputs to the IPBES Work Programme 2014-2018; strengthen regional participation in the IBPES intersessional process on other elements of the Platform; develop an active network of institutions contributing to IPBES work and related capacity building in Latin America and the Caribbean; and identify possible partnerships between Institutions and/or Governments to strengthen sub-regional and regional biodiversity and ecosystems services assessments, as well as knowledge generation, within the IPBES framework.
31 May 2013: Hosted by the Norwegian Government in cooperation with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the World Bank, the seventh Trondheim Conference on Biodiversity was held from 27-31 May 2013, in Trondheim, Norway, under the title 'Ecology and Economy for a Sustainable Society.'
21 May 2013: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP), in its role as Secretariat of the 10-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP 10YFP), has launched The Global SCP Clearinghouse. The Clearinghouse uses social networking principles to create a “one-stop hub” for SCP knowledge and cooperation.
17 May 2013: In preparation for the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB), to be celebrated on 22 May 2013, with celebrations around the globe focusing on the theme 'Water and Biodiversity,' the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has circulated the IDB's logo, booklet and messages, all of which are available for use by parties in their celebrations.
12 May 2013: This year's celebrations for World Migratory Bird Day 2013, held 11-12 May, highlighted the importance of ecological networks for the survival of migratory birds, the important human networks dedicated to their conservation, the threats migratory birds face, and the need to strengthen international cooperation to conserve them.
