Organized in the framework of the International Year of Biodiversity (IYB), the UNESCO Biodiversity Science Policy Conference was held from 25-29 January 2010, at UNESCO headquarters, in Paris, France, immediately following the high-level launch of IYB in Paris from 21-22 January 2010.
The GEF Council Meeting will develop, adopt and evaluate GEF programmes. Council members representing 32 constituencies (16 from developing countries, 14 from developed countries, and two from countries with transitional economies) will be represented. An NGO Consultation will be held on the first day.
Held from 5-9 October 2009, in Nairobi, Kenya, the second Ad Hoc Intergovernmental and Multi-stakeholder Meeting on an Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES-II) discussed the findings of a gap analysis on the existing science-policy interface on biodiversity and ecosystem services, options to strengthen such interface, and possible functions and governance structures of an intergovernmental science-policy platform.
Hosted by FAO, with partners including the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Seed Schemes, the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV), the International Seed Testing Association and the International Seed Federation, this event will focus on the theme “Responding to the challenges of a changing world: The role of new plant varieties and high quality seed in agriculture.” It will comprise a two-day Expert Forum, followed by a one-day Policy Forum. Meeting from 25-29 May 2009, in Jeju, Republic of Korea, the 21st session of the International Coordinating Council of the Man and the Biosphere Programme decided to add 22 new sites from 17 countries to UNESCO's World Network of Biosphere Reserves, which now counts 553 sites in 107 countries.
The twenty-fifth session of the UNEP Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environmental Forum adopted the decision 25/10 on the intergovernmental science-policy platform on biodiversity and ecosystem services, which requested UNEP to convene a second intergovernmental multi-stakeholder meeting on IPBES in 2009 (scheduled for 5-9 October 2009).
