8 April 2013: The UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) agreed on a campaign to be launched later this year calling on tourists to help reduce demand for illicit goods and services linked to transnational organized crime.
This training course is being organized by the UN World Tourism Organization (WTO) with the support of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety. It is being held at the Wadden Sea Biosphere Reserve of Schleswig – Holstein, Germany, and will have an emphasis on coastal tourism. The course is aimed at national and local authorities, the private tourism sector and NGOs involved in biodiversity and tourism. Training modules will provide a thorough understanding of the CBD “Guidelines on Biodiversity and Tourism Development” among other topics.
19 October 2012: The UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), together with the Government of Tanzania, convened the First Pan-African Conference on Sustainable Tourism in African National Parks, from 15-18 October, in Arusha, Tanzania. Attended by tourism ministers, representatives of the private sector, and conservation officials, the Conference adopted the Arusha Declaration.
2 February 2012: The Secretariat of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention) and the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) jointly celebrated World Wetlands Day (WWD) 2012 around the theme of wetlands and tourism, with the goal of advancing sustainable tourism development in wetlands.
21 September 2011: A Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) was signed between the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and 27 international agencies, organizations and environmental conventions, aiming to achieve and implement the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and its Aichi Biodiversity Targets.
3 June 2011: The UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has announced the 2011 Ulysses Awards, which encourage innovation in tourism. Several of the winning projects focused on environmental protection and sustainable tourism.
February 2011: The Sustainable Development of Tourism Programme of the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has released the February 2011 edition of the Sustainable Development of Tourism Newsletter.
November 2010: The UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has released a publication titled "Tourism and Biodiversity: Achieving Common Goals Towards Sustainability." It considers the relationship between tourism and biodiversity, and assesses how tourism can contribute to protecting biodiversity and enhance biodiversity's role as a main resource for tourism destinations.
September 2010: The UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) celebrated World Tourism Day on 27 September.
