12 August 2011: The UN Universal Postal Union has announced the winners of this year's International Letter-Writing Competition for Young People. In keeping with the International Year of Forests 2011, this year's topic was a plea to save the world's forests. Youth were asked to imagine themselves as a tree, writing a letter to someone to explain the importance of protecting forests.

Held from 5-9 October 2009, in Nairobi, Kenya, the second Ad Hoc Intergovernmental and Multi-stakeholder Meeting on an Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES-II) discussed the findings of a gap analysis on the existing science-policy interface on biodiversity and ecosystem services, options to strengthen such interface, and possible functions and governance structures of an intergovernmental science-policy platform.
