22 June 2011: The closing celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the UN Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) aimed to promote international awareness of, and involvement in, ocean science.
May 2011: The Group on Earth Observations (GEO) has released the May issue of its newsletter, titled "GEO News" on new developments in the implementation of the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS), which highlights advances in climate observation collaboration in the US and Europe.
17 June 2011: The annual World Day to Combat Desertification was marked on 17 June 2011, with events and statements from leaders around the world. The specific focus of the Day was on forests in the drylands areas of the world, in keeping with the International Year on Forests (2011), and guided by the motto: “Forests keep drylands working.”
15 March 2011: Representatives from the Secretariat of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) met on 15 March 2011, in Bonn, Germany, to review the WMO-UNCCD partnership and to further strengthen their cooperation in common areas of interest.
26 October 2010: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) have released a report titled "Climate, Carbon and Coral Reefs," outlining the threat to coral reefs caused by climate change and subsequent coral bleaching, as well as by ocean acidification.
6 October 2010: The International Symposium on "Benefiting from Earth Observation - Bridging the Data Gap for Adaptation to Climate Change in the Hindu-Kush Himalayan Region" met from 4-6 October 2010, in Kathmandu, Nepal.
May 2010: The 41st meeting of the Ramsar Standing Committee took place from 26 April-1 May 2010, in Kobuleti, Georgia. The Standing Committee considered the work of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Administrative Reform regarding the proposal to move the Ramsar Secretariat to UNEP, and decided to mandate the Working Group to continue its work, to determine the modalities for implementing a transfer of the Ramsar Secretariat to UNEP, including: options for reducing the costs of a UNEP-administered Ramsar Secretariat; transition arrangements; timing and a timeline for implementation; and the added benefits to the Convention.
The eleventh Special Session of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum (GCSS-11/GMEF) convened from 24-26 February 2010, in Bali, Indonesia.
3 March 2010: The African Union Commission (AUC) commemorated Africa Environment Day under the theme “African Resilience to Climate Change: Biodiversity Conservation and Enhancing Traditional Knowledge,” in celebrations hosted by the Government of Tanzania.
