Stakeholders Consider Draft Action Plan on Forests and the Green Economy [viewed]

11 May 2010: A stakeholders meeting on the development of an action plan on forests and the green economy was held in Geneva, Switzerland, from 10-11 May 2011, under the auspices of the Forestry and Timber Section of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), in cooperation with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).

Event: Stakeholder Meeting to Develop an Action Plan on Forests and the Green Economy [viewed]

The Forestry and Timber Section of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), in cooperation with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), is organizing a meeting with stakeholders across the UNECE region (Western and Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, Central Asia and North America) to discuss the development of an action plan on forests and the green economy. Discussion will focus on: Sustainable Wood Consumption and Production; Low-carbon Forest Sector; Valuation of and Payments for Ecosystem Services; Monitoring and Governance; and Green Jobs. The action plan, once finalized, will be reviewed by the UNECE Timber Committee and FAO European Forestry Commission at their joint session, scheduled from 10-14 October 2011 in Antalya, Turkey. It will then be presented as a regional sectoral example at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) in June 2012.

Event: UNECE/FAO Workshop: Payments for Ecosystems Services: What role for a green economy? [viewed]

The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), in cooperation with the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment and the Finnish Environment Institute, are organizing a workshop to discuss the role of payment for ecosystem services for the green economy. The workshop will address issues linked to payments for different ecosystem services, particularly in the forest and water sectors, to explain the sectoral relevance of environmental research linked to the valuation and payment of ecosystem service. The outcome of this workshop will feed into an action plan on forests and the green economy that will be discussed at the joint session of the UNECE Timber Committee and FAO European Forestry Commission from 10-14 October 2011 in Antalya, Turkey, and presented as a sectoral contribution at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) in 2012.

UNECE Organizes Albania Consultation Meeting on Drin Basin Management [viewed]

6 April 2011: The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Global Water Partnership-Mediterranean (GWP-Med) convened a meeting in Tirana, Albania, on 5 April 2011, to discuss and elaborate on management issues, needs and actions for the sustainable management of the Drin Basin, as well as to facilitate the development of the Strategic Shared Vision for the Basin's management.

The seminar was titled, "How successful is Sustainable Forest Management in the UNECE Region? State of forests and forest management in the UNECE region in the context of current needs and challenges."

Event: UNECE Illegal Logging Workshop [viewed]

This workshop is organized by the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and is titled "Does banning illegal logging rule out wood? Implications of recent trade legislation within the UNECE region for the forest-based sector." It aims to: increase understanding of recent legislation in the UNECE region, including in the US and EU, on trade in timber, and its likely impacts on the global forest-based sector; and stimulate focused stakeholder discussion as a basis for drawing recommendations, to be made publicly available.

This seminar will be held on World Forest Day as part of Regional Forest Information Week. Organized by the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the seminar is titled "How successful is Sustainable Forest Management in the UNECE Region? State of forests and forest management in the UNECE region in the context of current needs and challenges." Sessions will consider: picture of the present and the past: overview of 20 years of sustainable forest management (SFM), including forest biodiversity; wood resources - status, trends and challenges; and criteria and indicators: how useful are they for SFM assessment?
