12 May 2013: This year's celebrations for World Migratory Bird Day 2013, held 11-12 May, highlighted the importance of ecological networks for the survival of migratory birds, the important human networks dedicated to their conservation, the threats migratory birds face, and the need to strengthen international cooperation to conserve them.
Organized by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) and the UN Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (OHRLLS), this expert group meeting will: assess the current status of the marine science and technology situation in the SIDS regions; identify frameworks for technology transfer of relevant and appropriate marine scientific technologies to SIDS; present the results of the marine science capacity development survey carried out by IOC (as a result of a voluntary commitment taken at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20)); and make concrete recommendations in capacity development that could contribute to the preparatory process towards the 2014 Third International Conference on SIDS.
23 April 2013: The first issue of the 2013 UN Chronicle has been released with a focus on the theme of water cooperation. Articles in the magazine address water cooperation in the context of cross-cutting issues such as development goals, women and agriculture, integrated water resources management (IWRM), and private sector involvement.
11 April 2013: The "High Seas, Our Future!" conference, which took place in Paris, France, concluded with the launch of the "Paris Appeal for the High Seas" stressing the importance of governance of the high seas, in the run up to negotiations on this topic in 2014.
2 April 2013: The Chair of the High Level Committee on Programmes (HLCP), UN System Chief Executives Board for Coordination (CEB), Achim Steiner, on behalf of the UN Secretary-General, has invited UN Member States and Specialized Agencies to submit names for possible nomination to the Ocean Compact Advisory Group (OCAG), and specified selection criteria. The call is open until 15 April 2013.
3 April 2013: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon addressed sustainable development, climate change and protection of the marine environment in remarks in Monaco, on 3 April 2013, on the occasion of the principality's 20th anniversary of UN membership.
22 March 2013: This year's edition of World Water Day, celebrated on 22 March, was organized around the theme of water cooperation and within the framework of the International Year of Water Cooperation. The Day's celebrations were coordinated by UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in collaboration with the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), for UN-Water.
21 March 2013: A number of high-level officials have issued statements in celebration of the first-ever International Day of Forests, including the UN Secretary-General, and the Heads of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the UN Department for Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF).
20 February 2013: The UN General Assembly launched the International Year of Quinoa with a High-Level Panel discussion during its plenary at UN Headquarters in New York. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Bolivian President Evo Morales and First Lady of Peru Nadine Heredia participated in the launch, which will be celebrated under the theme "A future sown thousands of years ago."
7 February 2013: In a working visit to UN Headquarters in New York, US, from 14-16 January 2013, Braulio Ferreira de Souza Dias, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), briefed UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the major outcomes of the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the CBD, underlining the importance of these decisions for the sustainable development agenda.
