This Conference organized by the Croatian Water Pollution Control Society (CWPCS) and the European Water Association (EWA) will address themes including: implementation of legal obligations related to water and environmental protection in sensitive areas; new concepts and technical solutions applicable in sensitive and protected areas (PAs); protection of surface and groundwater resources and of strategic drinking water reserves; and water in sensitive transboundary areas. The conference will also include a round table on tourism in sensitive and PAs.

7 December 2012: The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) has opened a Nordic Center at the University of Eastern Finland, Joensuu. The new institution will focus on topics related to sustainable forestry, bio-resource management, bio-economic innovation, and renewable energy in the boreal and arctic areas, as well as globally.

The Third International Conference for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) is scheduled to convene from 1-4 September 2014, in Samoa. This conference will include a high-level segment to build upon the Barbados Programme of Action (BPOA) and the Mauritius Strategy for Implementation (MSI), and will identify new challenges for the sustainable development of SIDS. According to UN General Assembly resolution A/67/L.66, "The General Assembly, recalling its resolution 67/207 of 21 December 2012, in which it welcomed the offer of the Government of the Independent State of Samoa to host the third International Conference on Small Island Developing States in 2014, decides that the third International Conference on Small Island Developing States shall be held from 1 to 4 September 2014 in Apia, to be preceded by activities related to the Conference from 28 to 30 August 2014, also in Apia".

13 December 2012: The Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance especially as Waterfowl Habitat (Ramsar Convention) has reported on the meeting of the management body of the Ramsar regional initiative for Coastal Wetlands of the Black and Azov Seas (BlackSeaWet). The meeting focused on a limited number of priority problems of wetland conservation, management and restoration to be addressed in 2013.

11 December 2012: The WWF-UK led project, Partnerships Involving Stakeholders in the Celtic Sea Ecosystem (PISCES), has produced a practical guide for stakeholders and government decision-makers on implementing the ecosystem approach in marine policy. The guide has a focus on marine spatial planning and implementation of the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD).

11 December 2012: The First Meeting of Signatories (MoS1) to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) Memorandum of Understanding concerning the Conservation of Migratory Birds of Prey in Africa and Eurasia (Raptors MoU) took place from 9-11 December 2012, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It was attended by more than 90 participants, including representatives from 22 Signatories and the EU.
