28 October 2012: Participants in the second technical workshop of the Western Indian Ocean Coastal Challenge (WIO-CC) adopted a declaration committing to fulfill the WIO-CC, including by addressing the need for a resource mobilization and sustainable finance strategy that includes private sector engagement. Representatives from Comoros, France (Réunion), Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, and Tanzania (Zanzibar) attended the workshop, held from 22-26 October 2012, in Port Louis, Mauritius.

Established during the 10th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Sustainable Ocean Initiative provides a global platform to build partnerships and enhance capacity to achieve the Aichi biodiversity targets related to marine and coastal biodiversity in a holistic manner. This workshop will showcase regional experiences focusing on West Africa, covering ecologically or biologically significant marine areas, and integrated marine and coastal area management towards achieving Targets 6 and 11 in a holistic manner.

This workshop aims to: facilitate the description of ecologically or biologically significant marine areas (EBSAs) through application of the Convention on Biological Diversity's (CBD) scientific criteria and other relevant criteria, as well as the scientific guidance on the identification of marine areas beyond national jurisdiction; collate, review, analyze and synthesize relevant scientific data collected through the CBD EBSA repository system; and compile and produce regional EBSA reports for consideration by the CBD's Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA). The workshop will focus on the South-Eastern Atlantic region.

23 October 2012: The North American Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) has presented a set of scientific guidelines for designing marine protected areas (MPAs) that are resilient to climate change. The Guidelines were developed by the CEC in collaboration with the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea's (ICES) Study Group on Designing Marine Protected Area Networks in a Changing Climate (SGMPAN).
