16 October 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) International Ecosystem Management Partnership (IEMP) has released its inaugural newsletter. The newsletter discusses the aims and mandate of the UNEP-IEMP and introduces the UNEP-IEMP team.
12 October 2012: On the occasion of the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Hyderabad, India, the World Bank has released a report that presents new approaches to financing nature conservation that can mobilize funding and community action and provide the long-term sustainability needed to secure healthier ecosystems and improve livelihoods.
16 October 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP)-based research consortium, The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB), has released the final consultation draft of a briefing note, titled "The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity for Water and Wetlands." The draft was released as a contribution to the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), convening in Hyderabad, India.
16 October 2012: The UN celebrated World Food Day on 16 October under the theme of “Agricultural Cooperatives: Key to Feeding the World,” drawing inspiration from the observance of the 2012 International Year of Cooperatives.
12 October 2012: The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) forest, trees and agroforestry research program and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in support of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets to reduce the rate of deforestation by half and ensure the sustainable management of forestry systems.
9 October 2012: The 64th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) addressed issues related to energy efficiency, ballast water management and ship-recycling. The session also led to the establishment of a new Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA) in the Saba Bank, in the north-eastern Caribbean area of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
1 October 2012: The International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) has launched the third phase of a trans-boundary biodiversity conservation project covering the three Mekong River Basin countries - Cambodia, Lao People's Democratic Republic, and Thailand - known collectively as the Emerald Triangle.
4 October 2012: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), along with AgriCord, Farmers Fighting Poverty, and the Forest and Farm Facility have released a report on what makes a forest producer organization successful. “Strength in Numbers: Effective Forest Producer Organizations” compiles case studies on developing organizational strength, creating networks, lobbying and policy-making, and developing business opportunities.
The 2013 Global Island Partnership (GLISPA) Annual Steering Committee will focus on GLISPA governance and its goals and priorities as they relate to island conservation and sustainable livelihoods.
1 October 2012: The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) announced that the Third Regional Meeting of Ministers of Agriculture and Forestry, which convened on 28 September 2012, in Nadi, Fiji, endorsed the Pacific Islands Regional Policy Framework for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation and forest conservation, sustainable management of forests, and enhancement of forest carbon stocks (REDD+).
