20 July 2011: Governments, international organizations and NGOs convened to discuss illegal trade of flora and fauna at the 11th Asian Regional Partners Forum on Combating Environmental Crime (ARPEC), organized by the Regional Centre of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in East Asia and the Pacific, under the auspices of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).
July 2011: The Secretariat of the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) has released the May/June edition of its Newsletter, which contains conservation news, updates about species campaigns, an Ambassador's Brief and news from the Secretariat.
The objectives for this meeting are to: provide an opportunity for Pacific countries to reach a consensus on common positions; enhance negotiation skills of country delegates; develop a strategy for effective participation at COP 10; and develop a "One Pacific Voice" at COP 10 through side events and exhibitions showcasing success stories and sustainable land management.
18 July 2011: The UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) Secretariat has launched a "Forest Heroes" Programme and Awards to recognize and honor everyday people who are committed to sustaining forests and actively promoting forest values.
13 July 2011: The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has reported that the Ilosaarirock festival in Joensuu, Finland, is cooperating on sustainable development with the North Karelia Biosphere Reserve by compensating for its carbon footprint and protecting a rare, endangered lizard.
13 July 2011: The European Commission has unveiled its proposals for reform of the EU Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), seeking to secure fish stocks and fishermen's livelihood for the future while putting an end to overfishing and depletion of fish stocks. The reform is expected to lead to a decentralized approach to science-based fisheries management by region and sea basin, and better governance standards in the EU and at the international level through sustainable fisheries agreements.
13 July 2011: The second meeting of the Caribbean Wetlands Initiative discussed the region's implementation of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention), and resulted in agreement on activities and material to be presented and disseminated during the upcoming Pan-American meeting and the 11th meeting of the contracting parties (COP 11) to the Ramsar Convention.
July 2011: The Secretariat of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention) has reported that the first plannning meeting of the Ramsar Centre for Eastern Africa (RAMCEA) brought together partner States to discuss the operationalization of the Centre. The meeting aimed to: agree on the governance and structure of, and the Strategic Framework for, the RAMCEA; assess the capacity gaps of the different contracting parties; and inform partner States about the RAMCEA, tools for implementing the Ramsar Convention, and national and regional linkages.
12 July 2011: The African Union (AU) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Africa Rice Center to enhance food security in Africa through increased collaboration and strengthened working relationships.
12 July 2011: A regional workshop on finance and biodiversity, organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in collaboration with the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Country Support Programme, was held on 9 July 2011, in Dakar, Senegal.
