Event: World Migratory Bird Day 2011 [viewed]

Organized by UN Environment Programme (UNEP) African Eurasian Waterbird Agreement and the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals, World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) 2011 will focus on the theme "Land-Use Changes From a Bird's-Eye View." The theme is intended to raise awareness about the dramatic effects human land use has on migratory birds and the ecosystems upon which they depend. WBMD was initiated in 2006 and is a global awareness-raising campaign highlighting the need for the protection of migratory birds and their habitats. On the second weekend each May, people around the world take action and organise public events such as bird festivals, education programmes and birdwatching excursions to celebrate World Migratory Bird Day and to help raise awareness around a specific theme.

CMS Meeting Urges Stronger Protection for Gorillas [viewed]

31 March 2011: An international meeting in Kigali, Rwanda, organized by the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), has called for better enforcement of wildlife law in the 10 countries in Africa with gorilla populations.

Implementation Phase Launched in Global Tiger Recovery Program [viewed]

28 March 2011: The Global Tiger Forum (GTF), Global Tiger Initiative (GTI) and India's National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) announced the launch of the implementation phase of the Global Tiger Recovery Program (GTRP) during the International Conference on Tiger Conservation and Global Workshop on GTRP Implementation. The Conference took place in New Delhi, India, from 28-30 March 2011.

28 March 2011: The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has organized a workshop for the Eastern European region on the national and regional implications of the Strategic Plan 2011-2020 and the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS). The workshop took place on 25 March 2011, in Kiev, Ukraine.

Event: Land Day 4 [viewed]

This event will be the fourth such event organized by the UNCCD Secretariat, and will take place in parallel to the meetings of the UNFCCC subsidiary body meetings to provide a forum for UNFCCC and UNCCD decision-makers to exchange ideas. Panel Session 1 will focus on climate financing and its long-term impacts on climate adaptation and mitigation at the local level. Panel Session 2 will examine the implication of the REDD+ and Cancun agreements for the drylands. Panel Session 3 will examine green growth and green economy.
