IFAD Recommends Global Response to Food Security [viewed]

IFAD18 August 2014: In advance of the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) has released an infographic, titled ‘Investing in Small Island Developing States,' and a publication, titled ‘IFAD's Approach in SIDS: A global response to island voices for food security.' These resources highlight SIDS' characteristics, show IFAD's strategic approaches to SIDS engagement, and propose moving towards “a global response to island voices for food security.”

International Workshop Recommends IWC Provide Scientific Information on Marine Debris Impacts [viewed]

UNEP and Norway Sign Agreement on GRID-Arendal's 25th Anniversary [viewed]

UNEP GRID Arendal14 August 2014: On the occasion of GRID-Arendal's 25th anniversary, UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Executive Director, Achim Steiner, and Olav Orheim, Chairman of the Board of Directors of GRID-Arendal, signed a Programme Cooperation Agreement in which Norway renewed its contribution to UNEP's Programme of Work for 2014. The Agreement includes a commitment of US$16 million to UNEP, including US$1 million to support action on marine plastic debris and microplastics and US$500,000 to improve fish food security in West Africa.

Event: International Mountain Day 2014 [viewed]

Organized under the theme 'Mountain Farming,' the 2014 International Mountain Day will focus on highlighting the rapid transformation of family farming in mountain regions driven by population growth and economic globalization, among other factors. The Day is meant to provide opportunities to: raise awareness on the importance of mountains to life; highlight opportunities and constraints in mountain development; and build partnerships for positive change in mountains and highlands, globally. Coordinated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the Day will also constitute one of the concluding events of the 2014 International Year of Family Farming and link to relevant FAO publications and programmes.

African and US Leaders Discuss Illegal Trade in Wildlife [viewed]

us.africa.summit4 August 2014: African Heads of State and US leaders discussed best practices and future steps in a 'Dialogue on Combating Wildlife Trafficking,' which took place during the US-Africa Leaders Summit. The event aimed to build on progress made in addressing illegal trade, identify areas where the US and Africa could collaborate to combat wildlife trafficking and inspire youth to safeguard their natural heritage for future generations.

Event: Inter-Regional Capacity-Building Workshop on REDD+ and Aichi Biodiversity Targets [viewed]

This workshop is organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in collaboration with the UN Environment Programme - World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC), with financial support from Japan. Through the inter-regional workshop, the CBD and UNEP-WCMC aim to explore the synergies between the Aichi Biodiversity Targets and objectives of REDD+ to develop a coherent approach to landscape planning processes. The workshop aims to support Parties in: increasing coordination between REDD+ and CBD focal points through sharing experiences and knowledge; integrating REDD+ actions into updated National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and mainstreaming into broader national policies; and demonstrating the appropriate data gathering processes, assessments, policies and other planning tools for implementing a coherent approach to REDD+ and NBSAPs. The workshop will take place back-to-back with the 'Capacity-Building Workshop for Mesoamerica on Ecosystem Conservation and Restoration.'

Event: Fourth High-Level Round Table on the ITPGR [viewed]

Titled 'The International Treaty, Climate Change and Food Security,' the Fourth High-Level Round Table on the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR) will take place on the occasion of the 69th session of the UN General Assembly and the UN Secretary General's Climate Change Summit. It aims to facilitate high-level discussion of how monetary and non-monetary benefits generated from the utilization of plant germplasm under the Treaty can support agricultural innovation for breeding climate-smart seeds; discuss how to address climate change impacts on food crops through Treaty systems; and showcase the value of the Treaty's Benefit-sharing Fund and its projects for climate adaptation of food crops.

Event: 7th Annual ESP Conference 2014 [viewed]

The 7th Conference of the Ecosystem Services Partnership (ESP) will convene under the title, 'Local action for the common good'. The conference will focus on the use of ecosystem services at the local level, with a special emphasis on Costa Rica and Latin America. Several EU-funded projects will present their results on Community-Based Ecosystem Management: CiVi.Net, COBRA, EcoADAPT and COMETLA. The Conference is organized by the Ecosystem Services Partnership with Fundación Neotrópica as its local host, and is supported by CATIE, Universidad Nacional, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature - Commission on Ecosystem Management (IUCN-CEM). The program of the Conference consists of a mix of plenary sessions, including keynote and panels; workshops, open topic sessions, special sessions and field trips.

July 2014 Water Finance Update [viewed]

World Bank-AfDB-ADB-IDB-EBRD-GEFJuly 2014: The World Bank, the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) undertook a variety of activities during July. Projects were approved across Africa, Latin America, Asia and Europe, addressing issues such as transboundary water management, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services, hydropower and climate resilience.

Arctic Council Task Force Discusses Advancing Scientific Cooperation [viewed]

Arctic Council23 July 2014: The Scientific Cooperation Task Force (SCTF) of the Arctic Council held its third meeting and exchanged views on a draft document related to advancing scientific cooperation among the Arctic States. The Task Force will continue working on the document at its next meeting in September in Tromsø, Norway.
