CITES CoP16 Decisions and Resolutions Enter into Force [viewed]

CITES14 June 2013: The Secretariat of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) has announced that the new listings of species and the 165 Decisions and 36 Resolutions adopted or revised at the 16th meeting of the CITES Conference of the Parties (CoP16), which convened in Bangkok in March 2013, entered into force on 12 June 2013.

GGIM Working Group Releases Report on Global Map for Sustainable Development [viewed]

UNGGIMJune 2013: The UN Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM) released the report of a working group tasked with considering a Global Map for Sustainable Development (GM4SD), the 'Development of a Global Map for Sustainable Developmen'” (E/C.20/2013/6/Add.1). The report describes the working group's progress, proposes a road map for consideration and highlights disaster and urban hazard mapping as a key input into the GM4SD.

Bioversity International, IUCN and IFAD Stress Agricultural Biodiversity for Global Health [viewed]

Event: Fourth ASEAN Heritage Parks Conference [viewed]

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) will organize the Fourth ASEAN Heritage Parks (AHP) Conference in the Philippines, with support from the GIZ Biodiversity and Climate Change Project, and the Government of the Philippines' Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Department of Tourism. The conference is for park managers in Southeast Asia to discuss how to achieve international biodiversity targets and identify opportunities for international cooperation. Thematic sessions will be organized on: effective management of protected areas; biodiversity and climate change; integrating biodiversity values; ecotourism, business and biodiversity; and indigenous and local communities in protected areas. AHP conferences take place every three years. The ACB serves as the secretariat of the AHP Programme, which aims to ensure that park managers, policy makers, conservationists, scientists and other stakeholders benefit from available best practices and lessons on the management of AHPs and other protected areas. The ASEAN Declaration on Heritage Parks was agreed and signed by the environment ministers of the 10 ASEAN Member States in December 2003 in Yangon, Myanmar. There are more than 32 ASEAN Heritage Parks in the region.

Event: Food, Forests, and Landscapes [viewed]

This event is being convened by the International Food Policy Research Institute
 (IFPRI) and the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), and will explore how the landscape approach can address food security challenges while protecting biodiversity and combatting climate change. IFPRI and CIFOR are members of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). The session will be webcast live.

Bioversity International Considers Gender in Forest Research [viewed]

The workshop aimed to identify differences between men and women with regard to the management of forests, as well as forest-related skills and knowledge.

UNDP, UNEP Toolkit Showcases Community Approaches to ICCAs [viewed]

UNDP UNEP5 June 2013: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) have launched 'A toolkit to support conservation by indigenous peoples and local communities,' which highlights community approaches to the conservation of Indigenous Peoples' and Community Conserved Territories and Areas (ICCAs).

Event: Third Meeting of the Global Network of Island and Coastal Biosphere Reserves [viewed]

The purpose of this meeting is to bring together representatives of island and coastal biosphere reserves to discuss the main challenges and threats facing these areas, namely: climate change; water, energy and food self‐sufficiency; and waste management. The meeting will also provide an opportunity for participants to share experiences and potential solutions. The Global Network of Island and Coastal Biosphere Reserves was created at the 21st Session of the International Coordinating Council of the Man and the Biosphere Programme of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2009. This Network aims to realize the potential of biosphere reserves in addressing climate change, particularly as places for learning about sustainable development and also for experimenting on mitigation and adaptation measures on climate change.

World Environment Day Celebrations Focus on Reducing “Foodprints” [viewed]

This year's celebrations were hosted by Mongolia, with thousands of activities taking place worldwide.

World Bank Highlights Little Green Data Book's Relevance to Post-2015 Agenda [viewed]

World Bank5 June 2013: The World Bank has released the 2013 edition of the 'Little Green Data Book,' the Bank's annual compilation of environment data. The Book assesses development and environment using over 50 indicators, including adjusted net savings (ANS), which aims to foster innovative ways of understanding sustainable development at the macroeconomic level, and to complement gross domestic product (GDP) measuring; both of which are key aspects of the post-2015 agenda.
