January 2013: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has released the Report of the Fourth Meeting of the Regional Fishery Body Secretariats Network (RSN), which reviews participants' focus on regional fishery body (RFB) financial structures, climate change, recreational fisheries, decision-making procedures within each RFB, the establishment of vulnerable marine ecosystems and child labour and other human rights issues in fisheries.

The Ad Hoc Open-ended Informal Working Group to study issues relating to the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity beyond areas of national jurisdiction (Informal Working Group on Marine Biodiversity) will meet in August 2013, at UN Headquarters in New York, US. It will be preceded by two intersessional workshops that will be convened in New York from 2-3 May and 6-7 May 2013.

The International Day of Forests will be observed for the first time on 21 March 2013. Considering that there was no globally-recognized date commemorating and raising awareness on this issue, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution in December 2012, on the recommendation of its Second Committee, proclaiming 21 March the annual International Day of Forests. The text encourages member States to organize annual events on forests and trees outside forests, including, for example, tree-planting campaigns. The draft requests the Secretariat of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) to act as the facilitator of the International Day in collaboration with governments, the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF) and other relevant organizations.

This meeting will bring together the members of the Bureau of the Conference of the Parties, the Chair of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA), and several experts from governmental, non-governmental organizations and stakeholders.
