January 2013: The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has published a call for proposals on "Renewable Energy Technologies Deployment and Migratory Species."
January 2013: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has released the Report of the Fourth Meeting of the Regional Fishery Body Secretariats Network (RSN), which reviews participants' focus on regional fishery body (RFB) financial structures, climate change, recreational fisheries, decision-making procedures within each RFB, the establishment of vulnerable marine ecosystems and child labour and other human rights issues in fisheries.
In July 2008, the Information System for the Promotion of Aquaculture in the Mediterranean (SIPAM) was handed over to the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) Secretariat for its institutional function. The 14th SIPAM Annual Meeting will take place in Paris, France.
23 January 2013: The new "Science for Environment Policy-Thematic Issue on Biodiversity, Agriculture and Health," published by the European Commission, features two alerts highlighting how species extinction threatens human well-being.
21 January 2013: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has issued a notification calling for information related to the scientific and technical needs for the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020.
The Ad Hoc Open-ended Informal Working Group to study issues relating to the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity beyond areas of national jurisdiction (Informal Working Group on Marine Biodiversity) will meet in August 2013, at UN Headquarters in New York, US. It will be preceded by two intersessional workshops that will be convened in New York from 2-3 May and 6-7 May 2013.
The International Day of Forests will be observed for the first time on 21 March 2013. Considering that there was no globally-recognized date commemorating and raising awareness on this issue, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution in December 2012, on the recommendation of its Second Committee, proclaiming 21 March the annual International Day of Forests. The text encourages member States to organize annual events on forests and trees outside forests, including, for example, tree-planting campaigns. The draft requests the Secretariat of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) to act as the facilitator of the International Day in collaboration with governments, the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF) and other relevant organizations.
This meeting will bring together the members of the Bureau of the Conference of the Parties, the Chair of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA), and several experts from governmental, non-governmental organizations and stakeholders. It is intended to be a brainstorming session on the work of the Convention in an informal setting.
17 January 2013: The UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food, Olivier De Schutter, has urged the European Parliament to integrate development policy into amendments to the European Union's (EU) Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).
15 January 2013: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has circulated the 56th edition of the Quarterly Report of the Convention, which contains a summary of key activities in implementing the decisions of the Conference of the Parties and other relevant matters during the period 1 January - 31 March 2012.
