The 8th session of the Fishery Resources Monitoring System (FIRMS) Steering Committee Meeting will take place from 4-5 and 8 February 2013. FIRMS is a global monitoring system that provides access to a wide range of information on the status and trends of marine fishery resources including their management. It draws together a unified partnership of international organizations, regional fishery bodies and, in the future, national scientific institutes, collaborating within formal agreement to report and share information on fisheries resources.

16 January 2013: A new report on Crop Expansion and Conservation Priorities in Tropical Countries, published in the journal PLoS One and involving scientists from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), analyzes crop distribution and expansion in 128 tropical countries and maps overlaps between conservation priorities and cultivation potential. The paper highlights the threat to biodiversity from the expansion of agricultural lands.

This Global Environment Facility (GEF) Expanded Constituency Workshop (ECW) in Cambodia brings together GEF focal points, focal points from the main Conventions (Biodiversity, Desertification, Climate Change and POPs), representatives from civil society and representatives from the GEF Secretariat and the GEF Agencies. Building on the success of the first two years of ECWs in 2011 and 2012, the third session will further strengthen participants knowledge of GEF-5 strategies, programs, policies and procedures. Countries involved in this workshop include: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam.
