UNEP-WCMC Models Policy Scenarios for Land, Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in East Africa [viewed]

Unep-Wcmc6 October 2014: A workshop by the UN Environment Programme - World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) and partners on scenario-guided policy analysis concluded that there is a need for increased integration between plans for agricultural development and environmental management. The workshop, which focused on the future of development, food security and the environment under climate change in East Africa, meant to identify important future policy questions for the region guided by research, and more specifically, modeling.

Event: Mainstreaming Sector Policies into Integrated National Sustainable Development Planning: Enhancing Sustainable Tourism, Urbanization, Resource Efficiency, Biodiversity and Environmental Protection [viewed]

The UN Symposium on 'Mainstreaming Sector Policies into Integrated National Sustainable Development Planning: Enhancing Sustainable Tourism, Urbanization, Resource Efficiency, Biodiversity and Environmental Protection' will: address options, ways and means to promote sustainable tourism that is economically viable (for public and private investors), socially and economically beneficial (for employees and small-scale entrepreneurs), and environmentally benign (minimal environmental impacts, enhanced resource efficiency and biodiversity conservation); advocate and promote integrated policy decision-making related to sustainable urbanization and tourism at all levels, including the various concerned government departments and agencies and public, private and community stakeholders; propose recommendations of good practice (for project developers, planer, and financiers), in terms of integration of the three dimensions of sustainable development; exchange information, review and analyze trends in global and regional tourism demand, analyze demand projections and compare alternative approaches to marketing strategies; identify potential areas or projects for international cooperation and partnerships; and to document best practice examples for publication on the Sustainable Development Knowledge Platform hosted by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). The event will be co-hosted by the Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization of Iran (ICHTO) and the Tehran Office of UN Development Programme (UNDP). It will be co-organized by DESA, in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Environment of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

ICCA Consortium Releases Aichi Targets Policy Brief [viewed]

iccas7 October 2014: The Indigenous Peoples' and Community Conserved Areas and Territories (ICCA) Consortium has released a policy brief, titled 'ICCAs & Aichi Targets,' which describes the current and potential role of ICCAs in achieving the Aichi Targets of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020. The brief asks the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 12) to increase support for ICCAs' contribution to meeting the Targets.

IFPRI, AfDB Publish Review of GM Crops in Africa [viewed]

Database Provides Genetic Markers for Tropical Trees [viewed]

World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF)17 September 2014: An interactive open-access database, called tropiTree, provides detailed information on genetic markers for 24 species of trees, which are important to smallholders in tropical agroforestry systems. Reduced sequencing costs made the development of the genetic markers in the database possible for ‘non-model' (or genetically under-researched) species.

Six Asia-Pacific Countries, FAO Meet to Develop Blue Growth Initiative [viewed]

FAO2 October 2014: Representatives from Bangladesh, Indonesia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Timor-Leste and Viet Nam worked with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) to develop a FAO regional initiative on blue growth at a two-day inception workshop. The blue growth initiative aims to intensify aquaculture production in a sustainable, environmentally sound and socially acceptable manner.
