Poaching Endangering World Heritage Sites [viewed]

com3823 June 2014: During the 38th Session of the World Heritage Committee, the Committee lamented the impacts of poaching and illicit wildlife trade on World Heritage Sites and called for strengthened cooperation with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) to protect listed Sites.

IPBES Offers Draft Guidance on Regional and Sub-Regional Assessments [viewed]

ipbes19 June 2014: The Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has released the first draft of a guidance document addressing the scoping of IPBES deliverable 2b, on regional and sub-regional assessments. The draft guidance is being circulated to member States and observers for comments to assist the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel (MEP) and Bureau with its finalization.

Event: ITPGR 10th Anniversary Celebration [viewed]

Co-organized by the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR) and the Geneva, Switzerland, office of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) under the patronage of the ITPGR High-Level Task Force, this high-level event will mark the tenth anniversary of the ITPGR's entry into force. The event will focus on the Treaty's role in addressing food-deficiencies in low income countries and preview future contributions to technology innovation for food security, agricultural biodiversity conservation and climate adaptation. The agenda includes presentations on recent activities and achievements in benefit-sharing and a round table discussion on future challenges and opportunities. In addition, an overview of the currently on-going third round of projects under the Treaty's Benefit-sharing Fund will aim to showcase the vital role of plant genetic resources in ensuring global food security and the success of the Treaty's system of access and benefit-sharing (ABS). The event will also highlight recent progress with regard to non-monetary benefit-sharing through the development of the Treaty's Global Information System on plant genetic resources, including a new initiative on seeds and genomics called “DivSeek.”

Working Group Discusses Scope, Parameters and Feasibility of Agreement on BBNJ [viewed]

United Nations19 June 2014: The eighth meeting of the UN General Assembly's (UNGA) Ad Hoc Open-ended Informal Working Group to study issues relating to the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity beyond areas of national jurisdiction (BBNJ) worked to clarify a series of substantive elements of a new agreement on BBNJ that were considered necessary to prepare recommendations to the UNGA at the next meeting of the Working Group, scheduled to take place in January 2015.

Event: 14th Congo Basin Forests Partnership (CBFP) Anchor Workshop [viewed]

Arctic Council to Produce Harmonized Map Covering Region [viewed]

CAFF18 June: The Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF), the Arctic Council's biodiversity working group, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to guide national mapping organizations in the Arctic in producing a harmonized map covering the entire Arctic region, with data on, inter alia, climate and biodiversity. The aim of the Arctic Spatial Data Infrastructure (Arctic SDI) is to help harmonize, combine and integrate diverse data sets.

Event: SCBD Dialogue Forum on Integrating the Perspectives of ILCs in Applying Scientific Criteria for EBSAs [viewed]

The Secretariat of the CBD (SCBD) is holding a Dialogue Forum on Integrating the perspectives of Indigenous and Local Communities (ILCs) in the application of the scientific criteria for ecologically or biologically significant areas (EBSAs).

This event will review the EBSA process and scientific criteria in the context of the needs, interests and perspectives of ILCs, with the aim of enhancing the use of traditional knowledge in applying EBSA criteria. The event will: seek input from ILCs on the preparation of training materials and modules focused on integrating traditional knowledge in the use of the EBSA criteria; and identify partnership opportunities for future training material application. The event will consist of presentations, roundtable discussions and a summary by the co-chairs. The meeting will take place on the sidelines of the 18th meeting of the CBD Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA), which is taking place from 23-28 June 2014.
