WAVES Promotes South-South Learning in Latin America [viewed]

waves13 January 2015: The Wealth Accounting and the Valuation of Ecosystem Services (WAVES) partnership has released its January 2015 newsletter, which features a workshop towards the first regional community of practice (CoP) on Natural Capital Accounting (NCA) in Latin America. Other items include a new programme for the development of international guidelines for ecosystem accounting, a World Bank mission to Colombia and upcoming workshops in the Botswana, Turkey and the Philippines.

Paper Explores Payments for Ecosystem Services to Tackle Land Degradation in Drylands [viewed]

eldJanuary 2015: With carefully designed policy support, economic instruments can help to reorient degraded rangelands towards more sustainable land management. This is one of the conclusions of an article published in the Journal of Environmental Management, based on a case study of land degradation in the Kalahari rangelands of southwest Botswana that was funded by the Economics of Land Degradation (ELD) Initiative.

Event: Webinar on Increasing Awareness of Soil Biodiversity and Carbon [viewed]

This webinar, titled “Learning from wetlands – the case for dry soils,” is being convened by the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), in collaboration with the Ramsar Convention Secretariat and Wetlands International. It aims to build knowledge and expand the understanding of policy and scientific issues related to reducing emissions from soil carbon based on lessons learned from peatlands and other wetlands. The webinar will address topics, such as: building scientific knowledge on soil carbon; establishing policy and regulatory frameworks; and implementing projects and programmes for reducing emissions. The webinar is targeted towards Focal Points, national biodiversity managers, sustainable land management (SLM) experts and other technical specialists in Africa. Outcomes include the identification of priority actions to enhance the consideration of soil biodiversity and carbon for implementing the CBD. Those who are interested should register before 6 February 2015.

Event: World Environment Day 2015 [viewed]

The 2015 World Environment Day (WED) global celebrations will convene under the theme resource efficiency and sustainable consumption and production (SCP) within the context of the planet's regenerative capacity. The slogan, ‘Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care,” was chosen through voting on social media.

Italy will serve as the host of WED 2015 and the global WED celebrations will be organized at the Milan Expo. Celebrations at the Milan Expo will complement the Expo's theme, ‘Feeding the Planet—Energy for Life,' which will showcase ideas, solutions and technology to help ensure healthy, safe and sufficient food for all while respecting the planet and its carrying capacity.

The WED 2015 programme at the Milan Expo will also involve activities with partners such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's (UNESCO) World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP), Slow Food, WWF Italy and the Green Film Network.

WED is celebrated annually on 5 June as a day for positive environmental action.

Event: Second Meeting of the ITPGR Technical Committee on Sustainable Use of PGRFA [viewed]

The Committee will provide advice to the Secretary of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR) on the coordination of the programme of work on sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGRFA), cooperation with the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and other relevant processes, and the development of a toolbox on the sustainable use of PGRFA.

Event: Third Meeting of the ITPGR Working Group to Enhance the Functioning of the MLS [viewed]

The Third Meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-Ended Working Group to Enhance the Functioning of the Multilateral System (MLS) of Access and Benefit-Sharing of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR) will be preceded by a day of regional and inter-regional consultations. According to its terms of reference, the Working Group is to develop a range of measures that will increase user-based payments and contributions to the ITPGR Benefit-Sharing Fund in a sustainable and predictable long-term manner, and enhance the functioning of the MLS by additional measures. As of 27 March 2015, the original dates of 21-24 April are expected to change; new dates will be communicated in agreement with the host government.

CGRFA Finalizes State of the World's Animal Genetic Resources Report; Agrees on Guidelines on ABS and Genetic Diversity for Climate Adaptation [viewed]

cgrfa1526 January 2015: The fifteenth session of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN's (FAO) Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA 15) addressed a series of sectoral and cross-sectoral issues, including: animal, forest and plant genetic resources; access and benefit-sharing (ABS) for genetic resources for food and agriculture (GRFA); biodiversity and nutrition; and climate change and GRFA. The session was held from 19-23 January 2015, in Rome, Italy.
