WED 2014 Spotlights SIDS [viewed]

worlddayunep5 June 2014: This year's World Environment Day (WED), hosted by Barbados and celebrated under the banner ‘Raise your Voice, Not the Sea Level', focused on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and the risks and opportunities they face, particularly with respect to climate change. The Day lent an additional focus to the 2014 International Year of SIDS, as well as the Third International Conference on the Small Island Developing States, which will convene in Samoa from 1-4 September 2014.

WorldFish and Partners Release Publication on Sustainable Aquaculture Scenarios [viewed]

wri-worldfish-worldbank5 June 2014: Farmed fish and shellfish production will need to increase by 133% between 2010 and 2050 to meet projected fish demand globally, according to a study by the World Resources Institute (WRI), WorldFish, the World Bank and Kasetsart University. The study findings are presented in a report, titled ‘Improving Productivity and Environmental Performance of Aquaculture,' which the organizations launched in a webinar on the occasion of World Environment Day.

Common Oceans Programme Addresses Fisheries Management and Biodiversity Conservation in ABNJ [viewed]

FAO-Common-OceansJune 2014: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has released a publication, titled ‘Common Oceans: Global Sustainable Fisheries Management and Biodiversity Conservation in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction.' The report introduces the Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ) Program, which focuses on tuna, deep-sea fisheries and biodiversity conservation.

EC Discusses Imported Deforestation [viewed]

European Union 26 May 2014: On the occasion of the 'High-level Conference on Deforestation and Forest Degradation in the Context of Climate Change and Biodiversity Loss,' the European Commission (EC) Commissioner for the Environment, Janez Potočnik, discussed the phenomenon of "imported deforestation," through which EU domestic consumption drives global land use change and deforestation.

Event: CBD International Workshop on Financing for Biodiversity [viewed]

This UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) workshop will provide technical follow-up on the elements of the recommendation on resource mobilization, to be adopted by the fifth meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Review of Implementation (WGRI 5) for consideration by the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention (COP 12). It is organized with support from Japan, the Republic of Korea and Switzerland, as well as the European Commission.

FAO Publishes First Global Assessment of Forest Genetic Resources [viewed]

FAO3 June 2014: For the first time, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has conducted a global assessment of forest genetic resources. ‘The State of the World's Forest Genetic Resources' is based on reports from 86 countries and encompasses approximately 85% of global forest cover.
