Senior Arctic Officials Prepare for Arctic Council Ministerial Meeting [viewed]

Arctic Council23 October 2014: The Senior Arctic Officials (SAOs) and Heads of Delegation of Indigenous Permanent Participant organizations of the Arctic Council met to assess overall progress toward the priorities set under the Canadian Chairmanship. SAO Chair, Vincent Rigby, noted that the productive meeting would yield a "rich set of recommendations" for the Arctic Council Ministers to consider. Notably, SAOs approved a report outlining concrete recommendations for reducing woodstove black carbon emissions.

IUCN Invites Comments on ‘The Promise of Sydney' [viewed]

UNECE: Regional Forest Cover Expanding, but Threatened by Urbanization [viewed]

FAO UNECE21 October 2014: The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) released the initial findings of a regional assessment of forest cover that highlights a 27.5 million hectare expansion of forested area from 2000 to 2015. According to the report, the UNECE region accounts for more than 41% of global forest cover and has shown an increase in both in protected forest areas as well as an expansion of payments for ecosystem services (PES).

ADB Workshop Examines Climate Change Implications in Mekong Region [viewed]

ADB-Greater Mekong10 October 2014: Following a workshop that examined 'Mekong Protected Areas and Climate Change – Implications for Livelihoods and Development,' over 60 participants from the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) are returning home to implement country action plans based on the best practices, tools and adaptation strategies learned at the workshop. The results of the workshop will also inform the 'Protected Areas, Development, and Climate Change in the GMS (PAD2)' project, set to commence in 2015.
