October 2012: During the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), held from 8-19 October 2012, in Hyderabad, India, CBD Executive Secretary Braulio Ferreira de Souza Dias and the Government of India made strong calls to Parties, partners and other stakeholders to become "biodiversity champions" by pledging support to achieve the Aichi biodiversity targets.
24 October 2012: In an effort to stop the loss of livestock genetic diversity, delegates from 80 countries met to present reports and discuss progress on implementing the Global Plan of Action for Animal Genetic Resource. The Plan of Action was developed in 2007, and has been followed by the Intergovernmental Technical Working Group on Animal Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, which met from 24-26 October 2012, in Rome, Italy.
23 October 2012: The Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance especially as Waterfowl Habitat (Ramsar Convention) has reported on the implementation of the Small Grant Fund Project titled “Effective Management of Ramsar Sites in Turkey.” The project, which was conducted by Doğa Derneği (Birdlife Turkey), consisted of stakeholder consultations to assess existing wetland management structures in the country, and led to the establishment of a technical commission.
19 October 2012: The UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), together with the Government of Tanzania, convened the First Pan-African Conference on Sustainable Tourism in African National Parks, from 15-18 October, in Arusha, Tanzania. Attended by tourism ministers, representatives of the private sector, and conservation officials, the Conference adopted the Arusha Declaration.
18 October 2012: The European Commission (EC) has issued new guidelines that aim to assist the inland navigation sector in ensuring that their activities comply with EU environmental policy and nature legislation, with a focus on the Birds and Habitats Directives.
17 October 2012: The Secretariat of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) has published the preliminary agenda and new working documents for the 16th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 16).
12 October 2012: On the occasion of the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Hyderabad, India, the World Bank has released a report that presents new approaches to financing nature conservation that can mobilize funding and community action and provide the long-term sustainability needed to secure healthier ecosystems and improve livelihoods.
October 2012: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has published a report titled "Integrated Ecosystem Management to Combat Natural Resources Degradation in Watersheds," which outlines lessons learned in applying integrated ecosystem management (IEM) to combat land degradation in Burkina Faso.
15 October 2012: The Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance especially as Waterfowl Habitat (Ramsar Convention) has reported that the Government of the Philippines has designated Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park as its fifth Wetland of International Importance.
12 October 2012: The Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance especially as Waterfowl Habitat (Ramsar Convention) has reported that the Government of Kazakhstan has designated the Lesser Aral Sea and Delta of the Syrdarya River as its 10th Wetland of International Importance.
