Event: Demystifying Crop Biotechnology: Issues and Concepts for the Asian Media [viewed]

This event, hosted by the International Crop Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), will be part of the 20th Annual Conference of the Asian Media Information and Communication Centre (AMIC) on 24-27 June 2011. In the first part of the colloquium, Clive James, ISAAA Chair, will speak on Global State of Crop Biotechnology. William Dar, ICRISAT Director General, will deliver the inaugural address, and Ang Peng Hwa, Chairman of AMIC, and SR Rao, Advisor to DBT-GOI, will deliver special addresses. The second part will be devoted to a tour of PTTC at the ICRISAT campus and a dialogue with the media. The colloquium is jointly organized by AMIC, the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), the Department of Biotechnology-Government of India (DBT-GOI), and the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA). ICRISAT is a member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research.

EU Environment Ministers Discuss 2020 Biodiversity Strategy [viewed]

EU flag21 June 2011: The Environment Council of the EU adopted conclusions on the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2020 on 21 June 2011. The Council endorsed the proposal made by the European Commission in May 2011, while emphasizing the need to further discuss its actions, and recognized the importance of effective monitoring and reporting mechanisms.

UNEP, MEAs Launch InforMEA Webportal [viewed]

14 June 2011: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP), together with 17 multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs), has launched a new webportal, titled "InforMEA," that draws information from the MEAs' individual websites to permit a user to search for information related to decisions and resolutions, news and events, meeting calendars, and national focal points across all of the participating MEAs.

CBD Launches New Website in Four UN Languages [viewed]

6 June 2011: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has unveiled a new version of the CBD website, which it also launched in Arabic, French and Spanish. Ahmed Djoghlaf, CBD Executive Secretary, said the Secretariat hopes to provide the website in all UN languages and urged additional financial support for this goal.

ICNP-1 Adopts Recommendations on Awareness Raising, Compliance [viewed]

13 June 2011: The Intergovernmental Committee for the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) adopted four recommendations, including on compliance with the Protocol, which emerged as the dominant discussion topic.
