As determined by the host of the meeting, the Minister of Environment & Forests of India, the high-level segment of the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) will focus on: implementation of the Strategic Plan on Biodiversity 2011-2020; biodiversity for livelihoods and poverty reduction; coastal and marine biodiversity; and implementation of the Nagoya Protocol on access to genetic resources and benefit-sharing.

ASEAN and India Ministers Issue Statement Ahead of CBD COP 11 [viewed]

13 September 2012: Environment ministers from Member States of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and India held a meeting on 7 September 2012, in New Delhi, India, and adopted the "New Delhi ASEAN-India Ministerial Statement on Biodiversity." The statement has been circulated as an information document in preparation for the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

SPC Convenes Pacific Regional Workshop on Forest Genetic Resources [viewed]

SPC17 September 2012: The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), with support from the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the UN (FAO), convened the Regional Workshop on Forest Genetic Resources (FGR) in the Pacific from 4-6 September 2012, in Nadi, Fiji. Participants shared country reports on FGR and developed priorities for action for the Polynesian, Micronesian and Melanesian subregions.

WIPO IGC Addresses Traditional Cultural Expressions [viewed]

July 2012: The Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore (IGC) of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) continued negotiations on the latest draft text of an international legal instrument on the protection of traditional cultural expressions. The IGC met from 9-13 July 2012, in Geneva, Switzerland.

Event: Intergovernmental Technical Working Group on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture [viewed]

The Intergovernmental Technical Working Group on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food Security will examine the implementation of the Second Global Plan of Action for Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. It will also examine a review of the draft updated Genebank Standards, the process for the preparatoin of the Third Report on the State of the World's Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, the status and trends in teh conservation and use of micro-organisms and invertebrates in rice and root crop-based production systems, and access and benefit-sharing for plant genetic resources.

Event: Ad Hoc Technical Working Group on Access and Benefit-sharing for Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture [viewed]

In 2011, the Commission decided to establish an Ad Hoc Technical Working Group on Access and Benefit-sharing for Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture and requested the Director-General of FAO to convene a three-day meeting of the Working Group. The Members of the Working Group, as elected by the Commission at its Thirteenth Regular Session, include, from Africa: Cameroon, Eritrea, Togo, Tunisia, Zambia; from Asia: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Indonesia, Lao (People's Democratic Republic), Thailand; from Europe: Norway, Spain, Switzerland, Netherlands, United Kingdom; from Latin America and the Caribbean: Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay; from Near East: Iran (Islamic Republic of), Lebanon, Yemen; from North America: Canada, United States of America; and from Southwest Pacific: Australia, Cook Islands.

CCAFS Report Focuses on Genetic Diversity in Agricultural Adaptation to Climate Change [viewed]

August 2012: Considering the importance of genetic diversity to successful agricultural adaptation, the Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security Program (CCAFS) has released a working paper that outlines the experience of eight centres of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) with reorganizing their activities to work on climate change adaptation.
