FAO Circulates Reports of ITWGs on Plant and Forest Genetic Resources [viewed]

FAOAugust 2014: The Secretariat of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has circulated the reports of the third session of the Intergovernmental Technical Working Group (ITWG) on Forest Genetic Resources, held from 7-9 July 2014, in Rome, Italy, and of the seventh session of the ITWG on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, held from 9-11 July 2014 also in Rome.

IWC65 Adopts Resolutions on Aboriginal Subsistence Whaling and Migratory Cetacean Species [viewed]

iwc18 September 2014: Delegates adopted several resolutions at the 65th session of the International Whaling Commission (IWC), including resolutions on aboriginal subsistence whaling, whaling under special permit and highly migratory cetacean species. IWC 65 also agreed on resolutions related to its Scientific Committee (SC), civil society participation and transparency at the IWC as well as its programme of work for its two year inter-sessional period.

IPBES Task Force Calls for Submissions on ILK and Pollinators [viewed]

ipbes17 September 2014: The Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) is conducting a global assessment on pollination and pollinators associated with food production. The IPBES Indigenous and Local Knowledge (ILK) task force is calling for submissions to generate worldwide inputs on ILK for this thematic assessment.

CBD Secretariat Circulates Provisional Programme and Briefing Notes for COP 12 High-Level Segment [viewed]

cop1415 September 2014: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has circulated the provisional programme and briefing notes for the High-Level Segment of the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12) to the CBD, prepared by the Government of the Republic of Korea, in consultation with the CBD Secretariat. The CBD COP 12 High-Level Segment will be held from 15-16 October 2014, under the theme 'Biodiversity for Sustainable Development.'

IPPC Joins Liaison Group of Biodiversity-Related Conventions [viewed]

IPPC12 September 2014: The Secretariat of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) has joined the Liaison Group of the Biodiversity-related Conventions, which includes the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES), the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR), the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, and the World Heritage Convention (WHC).

ITPGRSeptember 2014: The Marshall Islands has ratified the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR) and will become a Party on 13 October 2014, bringing the number of Parties to the ITPGR to 132.

Event: 16th Global Meeting of the Regional Seas Conventions and Action Plans [viewed]

The UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) Regional Seas Programme uses a "shared seas" approach to maintain the biodiversity of oceans and marine ecosystems and to help restore ocean and marine ecosystem health, productivity and resilience. The meeting is expected to discuss: implementation of the Regional Seas Conventions and Action Plans, including their role in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the post-2015 development agenda; the Global Partnership on Marine Litter; regional actions on marine litter; the green economy in a blue world; and development of a roadmap on priorities for the next ten plus years. The meeting takes place during the 40th Anniversary of the Regional Seas Conventions and Actions Plans.

Coffee Gene Sequencing Project Supports Climate Adaptation [viewed]

idb-fontagro11 September 2014: The complete sequence of the coffee genome has been released into the public domain in an attempt to accelerate plant variety selection in the face of climate change and to meet growers' specific needs. The genetic information of the Coffea arabica and Coffea eugenioides species, containing the location and characterization of more than 30,000 genes, was presented during the Conference of the Association for Science and Information on Coffee (ASIC), held 8-13 September in Armenia, Colombia.

Event: ITPGR High-Level Expert Workshop on Food Crops for Agriculture in Changing Climate: An Expert Communiqué [viewed]

To be held on the sidelines of the UN Climate Summit, this Expert Workshop will address the role of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR) in addressing the challenges of producing more nutritious food on less land under the influence of climate change. The workshop will cover activities and initiatives under the Treaty in three segments: conservation and management of crop diversity; the Treaty systems for downstream use of crop diversity; and breeding and making available climate-smart varieties to farmers.

WECAFC Report Outlines Recommendations and Resolutions on Fisheries Management [viewed]

fao-wecafcSeptember 2014: The Western Central Atlantic Fishery Commission (WECAFC) has released the report of its 15th Session. The report highlights the adoption of four regional fisheries management recommendations and five resolutions, including on illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and the implementation of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) Voluntary Guidelines on Small-scale fisheries and Tenure.
