This High-Level Side Event to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) is hosted by the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF). Leaders of the member organizations of the CPF, including the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF), the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), as well as forest Ministers from the Gambia and Republic of Korea, will discuss landscape mosaics and integrating people and forests, and integrating forests into landscapes at the country level.

13 June 2012: The Rio Conventions Pavilion (RCP) opened on 13 June 2012, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in parallel with the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20). The Pavilion began with an event presented by the International Institute for Sustainable Development Reporting Services (IISD RS) on “Roads from Rio,” followed with a reception sponsored by the Rio Conventions (the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

This side event will be held during the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) and is being co-organized by the Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) Capacity Development Initiative and the Confederation of Danish Industry. The aim of the event is to deliver messages from the ABS business dialogue which was held two weeks before Rio +20, during which participants formulated messages on how to effectively implement the Nagoya Protocol and how different business models can contribute to it.

This side event to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) aims to contribute to the "The Future We Want" outcome document by highlighting the need to better manage mountain natural resources as global public goods supplying water for life, food for health, and clean energy for livelihoods. The event will focus on sharing research-based knowledge on such topics as conservation of freshwater resources and critical biodiversity, maintenance of gene pools, and protection of forest, wetland and rangeland ecosystems. Particular attention will be given to strategies and action proposals for enhancing people's livelihoods and well-being.

The EU will hold a forum to address major development issues in the EU Outermost Regions (Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, Réunion, Saint Martin, the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands) in light of the Europe 2020 Strategy to promote smart, sustainable and inclusive growth.
