Event: Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States [viewed]

The Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) is scheduled to convene from 1-4 September 2014, in Samoa. This UN conference will include a high-level segment to build upon the Barbados Programme of Action (BPOA) and the Mauritius Strategy for Implementation (MSI), and will identify new challenges for the sustainable development of SIDS. According to UN General Assembly resolution A/67/L.66, "The General Assembly, recalling its resolution 67/207 of 21 December 2012, in which it welcomed the offer of the Government of the Independent State of Samoa to host the third International Conference on Small Island Developing States in 2014, decides that the third International Conference on Small Island Developing States shall be held from 1 to 4 September 2014 in Apia, to be preceded by activities related to the Conference from 28 to 30 August 2014, also in Apia". In addition, a Partnerships Forum will take place on 30-31 August.

UNGA Highlights UNCLOS as Tool for Conservation, Sustainability [viewed]

10 December 2012: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) held a session to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the launch of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Addressing the meeting, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon noted the Convention's contribution to international peace and security, as well as to the equitable and efficient use of ocean resources.

GEF CEO Launches Forum on Innovation and Partnership [viewed]

6 December 2012: Naoko Ishii, CEO and Chairperson of the Global Environmental Fund (GEF), announced launch of the Forum on Innovation and Partnership on the sidelines of the 18th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 18) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The initiative aims to foster "thought provoking" discussion on creative innovation and technology transfer.

UNGA Second Committee Approves Resolution on Caribbean Sea [viewed]

28 November 2012: The UN General Assembly's (UNGA) Second Committee (Economic and Financial) has approved draft resolution A/C.2/67/L.41 on “Towards the sustainable development of the Caribbean Sea for present and future generations.” The resolution falls under the agenda item on follow-up to and implementation to the Mauritius Strategy for the Further Implementation (MSI) of the Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

Mountain Day 2 Calls for Strengthening Global Mountain Agenda in Multilateral Negotiations [viewed]

3 December 2012: Mountain Day 2, which focused on the topic "Mainstreaming Rio+20 outcomes in the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) processes for prosperous, resilient, and sustainable mountain ecosystems and communities,” took place in Doha, Qatar, on 3 December 2012, on the sidelines of the 18th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 18) to the UNFCCC.

Event: Expert Consultation on Research and Management Priorities for High-Altitude Rangelands and their Interfaces [viewed]

The workshop on Research and Management Priorities for High Altitude Rangelands and their Interfaces in the Hindu Kush Himalayas, organized by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), will bring together partners and international experts working on ecosystem interfaces of high-altitude rangelands to identify knowledge needs and priorities and to develop an advocacy plan for high-altitude rangelands in the Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region. The workshop will build on ICIMOD's efforts to promote the conservation of rangelands and regional cooperation in transboundary landscapes, including the Kailash Sacred Landscape, as well as identify development opportunities for local communities dependent on high-altitude rangeland ecosystems.

Event: Fourteenth Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum (GMGSF-14) [viewed]

This meeting is being organized by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) in conjunction with its twenty-seventh session of the Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum (GC27/GMEF) to be held from 18-22 February 2013 in Nairobi, Kenya. The objective of the Forum is to facilitate preparations of major groups and stakeholders towards the GC27/GMEF, which will hold ministerial-level consultations on emerging policy issues under the following themes: Implementing Rio+20: A strengthened environmental pillar of sustainable development; and Implementing a green economy as an important tool for achieving sustainable development.
