UNEP Preparing Draft Medium-Term Strategy [viewed]

Event: Sixth European Organic Congress [viewed]

Under the theme “Smart change - towards a sustainable Common Agricultural Policy (CAP),” this Congress aims to address the policy change needed to come to a "greener, smarter, fairer European CAP" for the future, improve the availability of sustainably produced food for consumers and to ensure the credibility of certification for sustainable farm systems. Participants will discuss, among other things: organic regulation and credibility in sustainable food production; strategic steps ahead for the CAP after 2013; paving the way to sustainable food supply through rural development programmes; and promoting organic consumption through promotional measures and green public procurement.

WEF Addresses Energy Poverty, Rio+20 [viewed]

30 January 2012: The World Economic Forum (WEF) held its annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, from 25-29 January 2012, gathering industry, business, government and other world leaders to discuss current issues. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon participated in two panels, on ending energy poverty and on the perspectives for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), warning “we cannot build a green economy on the backs of the poorest and most vulnerable people.”

GSP Report Calls for Making Social and Environmental Costs Transparent [viewed]

30 January 2012: The UN Secretary-General's High-level Panel on Global Sustainability (GSP) has released its final report, titled “Resilient People, Resilient Planet: A Future Worth Choosing.” The report's 56 recommendations seek to mainstream sustainable development into economic policy, by integrating social and environmental costs into pricing and measuring of economic activities.

Conference Addresses Role of Forests, Markets in Green Economy [viewed]

13 January 2012: A recent meeting in support of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) addressed the role of markets and promotion of sustainable forest management (SFM) on the pathway to a green economy. The meeting's outcomes will be used as input for both the 10th session of UNFF as well as the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).

Andean Community Approves Budget for 18 BioCAN Projects [viewed]

20 January 2012: The Oversight Committee for the Andean Community's (CAN) biodiversity program, BioCAN, approved a budget of €4 million for 18 pilot projects during the January 2012-June 2013 period. The approved projects are expected to contribute to the development of regional biodiversity products such as the Amazon Regional Information Platform (PIRAA), guidelines for land zoning and sustainable use of Amazonian biodiversity, and norms for wildlife management.

UNEP Highlights Role of Ecosystem Management in Africa's Development [viewed]

UNEP17 January 2011: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has released the seventh issue in its Policy Series on Ecosystem Management, titled “Putting Ecosystem Management in the Vision of Africa's Development: Towards a Sustainable Green Economy.” The brief addresses the foundational significance of ecosystems for human well-being in the African region.
