23 March 2011: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has announced that, as part of its collaboration with the 2014 Winter Olympic Games Sochi organizing committee, it has submitted to the Organizing Committee environmental action plans that cover key areas including Zero Waste and Climate Neutrality.
23 March 2011: The report of the 31st meeting of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Afforestation and Reforestation (A/R) Working Group, which was held from 14-16 March 2011 in Bonn, Germany, is now available on the CDM website. The Working Group considers matters relating to CDM afforestation and reforestation project activities.
14 March 2011: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) is funding the second phase of the Amazon Region Protected Areas Project (ARPA), further to a successful first phase that allowed the designation of 24 million hectares as new protected areas and consolidated or established management and enforcement systems for over eight million hectares of the new protected areas.
February 2011: The UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has released a discussion paper titled "Assuring Food Security in Developing Countries under the Challenges of Climate Change: Key Trade and Development Issues of a Fundamental Transformation of Agriculture."
16 March 2011: The Secretariats of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have issued a joint notification inviting CBD National Focal Points and focal points for the CBD's Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) to contribute to and review chapters of its Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) related to biodiversity and climate change, to be completed in 2014.
This workshop is being convened by the Secretariats of the CBD and CITES, in collaboration with the Great Apes Survival Partnership, the Secretariat of the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS), FAO and other organizations. The workshop aims to: encourage and enable parties and relevant inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations to take effective action to ensure the conservation and sustainable use of wildlife resources in tropical and sub-tropical forests; develop options for small-scale food and income alternatives in tropical and sub-tropical countries based on the sustainable use of biodiversity; and revise the recommendations of the Liaison Group on Bushmeat.
March 2011: The Secretariat of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) has published the latest issue of its UNCCD News publication. Issue 2.6 focuses on the issues of agroforestry and UNCCD activities related to assessing the economics of desertification, land degradation and drought.
15 March 2011: In a new report, a survey carried out by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in 2010 shows that local populations living close to protected areas in West Africa earn an additional 40% of their income from activities related to these areas. The findings highlight protected areas' potential for reinforcing sustainable development as well as conservation, according to IUCN.
13 March 2011: The African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Multilateral Environment Agreements (MEAs) Project has launched a dedicated project website that features links to regional hubs, updates on project activities, information on upcoming events and related publications.
11 March 2011: The Ministerial Conference on Biodiversity, Food Security and Climate Change, held on 11 March 2011, in Bali, Indonesia, adopted the Bali Ministerial Declaration on the Role of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR) on Biodiversity, Climate Change and Food Security.
