GEF Amazon Project Delivers Biodiversity and Climate Change Benefits [viewed]

CBD, IPCC Invite Contributions for AR5 on Biodiversity and Climate Change [viewed]

16 March 2011: The Secretariats of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have issued a joint notification inviting CBD National Focal Points and focal points for the CBD's Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) to contribute to and review chapters of its Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) related to biodiversity and climate change, to be completed in 2014.

Event: Joint meeting of CBD Bushmeat Liaison Group and CITES Central Africa Bushmeat Working Group [viewed]

This workshop is being convened by the Secretariats of the CBD and CITES, in collaboration with the Great Apes Survival Partnership, the Secretariat of the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS), FAO and other organizations. The workshop aims to: encourage and enable parties and relevant inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations to take effective action to ensure the conservation and sustainable use of wildlife resources in tropical and sub-tropical forests; develop options for small-scale food and income alternatives in tropical and sub-tropical countries based on the sustainable use of biodiversity; and revise the recommendations of the Liaison Group on Bushmeat.

IUCN Report Shows Protected Areas Increase Economic Gains in West Africa [viewed]

15 March 2011: In a new report, a survey carried out by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in 2010 shows that local populations living close to protected areas in West Africa earn an additional 40% of their income from activities related to these areas. The findings highlight protected areas' potential for reinforcing sustainable development as well as conservation, according to IUCN.
