14 May 2010: The UN Environment Programme-World Conservation Monitoring Center (UNEP-WCMC), with support from the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN), has launched a new website highlighting the potential for actions on maintaining natural carbon stocks to generate co-benefits, i.e. that are additional to climate change mitigation effects.
This annual summit organized by the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB) brings together heads of state and government from Spain, Portugal and the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking nations of Latin America. The subject of biodiversity is expected to be on the Summit agenda.
This Forum will focus on the theme “Solutions for Water”. The World Water Forum has convened every three years since 1997. The goal of the 6th World Water Forum is to tackle the challenges our world is facing and to raise the profile of water high on all political agendas.
This conference will bring together academic institutions, government bodies and civil society groups to discuss jointly the major challenges facing people, wildlife and ecosystems internationally in 2010 and the future. Placing major emphasis on the perspectives of peoples most vulnerable to the harms of ecosystem destruction, including indigenous peoples, women, and young people, the three main themes for the conference are: urban ecohealth; biodiversity and ecohealth; and sustainability and future priorities for ecohealth.
30 April 2010: The ninth session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII), which convened from 19-30 April 2010, at UN Headquarters in New York, US, considered economic and social issues and their impacts, including the financial crisis, climate change, forests and the actions of multinational corporations, among other issues.
26 April 2010: The First Ministerial Conference on the Environment and Renewable Energy within the framework of the 5+5 Mediterranean Dialogue convened on 26 April 2010, in Oran, Algeria, with representatives from Northern Mediterranean countries (Spain, France, Italy and Portugal) and five Southern Mediterranean countries (Algeria, Libya, Morocco, Mauritania and Tunisia).
23 April 2010:The People's World Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth convened in Cochabamba, Bolivia, from 19-22 April 2010. An initiative of Bolivian President Evo Morales, the Conference provided a forum to discuss the structural and systemic causes of climate change and propose substantive measures that facilitate the well-being of mankind in harmony with nature.
This event is co-organized by the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). It will focus on the intersection between trade and biodiversity policy in the promotion of sustainable development. Participants will also explore the links between trade policy and biodiversity as it relates to sectoral themes, including agriculture, intellectual property, fisheries and climate change.
This UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) seminar will train biosphere reserve managers and MAB partners in bio-carbon project design and management. It will bring together regional stakeholders to discuss concrete steps toward strengthening the biosphere reserve network in Central Africa and using Congo Basin biosphere reserves as pilot sites to combat deforestation, protect biodiversity, and promote sustainable development through bio-carbon modalities.
The first Global Conference on Agriculture Research for Development (GCARD), which convened in Montpelier, France, from 29-31 March 2010, examined the need for investment in agricultural research and the roles that can be played by various institutions to increase the impact of new knowledge among the poor.
