15 March 2013: The Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar Convention) has reported that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has designated the Mangrove and Alhafeya Protected Area in Khor Kalba, located in the emirate of Sharjah, as its third Wetland of International Importance.
14 March 2013: The Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar Convention) has reported on the recent meeting of the Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF) programme of the Arctic Council. CAFF's main activity is the Circumpolar Biodiversity Monitoring Program (CBMP) focusing on terrestrial, freshwater and marine biodiversity.
March 2013: Announced on the sidelines of the sixteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on the International Trade of Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES CoP 16), the Great Apes Survival Partnership (GRASP)-Ian Redmond Conservation Award is seeking applications for possible recipients.
The second meeting of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) is exepected to take place in late 2013.
8 March 2013: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has circulated two proposed amendments to the Rules of Procedure of its Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA), to be considered during the CGRFA's fourteenth session, to be held from 15-19 April 2013, at FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy.
12 March 2013: The International Consortium on Combating Wildlife Crime (ICCWC) held a training session for wildlife law enforcement officials from across Asia. The training, which focused on investigative techniques, took place on the sidelines of the sixteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES CoP 16).
12 March 2013: A new mobile application, AppliFish, provides consumers with information to help make informed choices when purchasing fish.
This Summit aims to bring together Heads of Governments, Ministers of the Environment, Chief Executive Officers of major corporations and donor agencies to set a new course for the management and preservation of the region's marine and coastal environment. Co-hosted by the Prime Minister of Grenada and the Premier of the British Virgin Islands, the event is supported by Richard Branson of the Virgin Group, and The Nature Conservancy. The Caribbean Challenge Initiative (CCI) was launched in 2008 to provide greater leadership for protecting and sustainably managing the marine and coastal environment across the Caribbean.
12 March 2013: The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) has announced that Bradnee Chambers has officially commenced his role as the new Executive Secretary of CMS. He succeeds Elizabeth Mrema.
8 March 2013: At an event in Bangkok, Thailand, held on the sidelines of the sixteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES CoP 16), representatives from Ecuador, Germany and the US described progress toward protecting sharks and meeting their international obligations under the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) Sharks Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
