27 June 2012: The Secretariat of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) announced that the UK has signed the CMS Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Migratory Sharks. The Sharks MoU was adopted to help develop management measures to protect threatened shark species, such as basking, longfin mako and whale sharks.

22 June 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) announced it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the EU's Committee of the Regions (CoR). The MoU seeks to strengthen the role of local and regional authorities within the policy decision-making process, and emphasizes the importance of placing sustainable cities at the heart of the global strategy on sustainable development.

7 June 2012: According to the 2012 International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species update for birds, the risk of extinction has increased substantially for close to 100 species of Amazonian birds. The assessment is based on the rate of deforestation occurring in the region. Of particular concern are species with longer life spans, such as the Rio Branco Antbird and the Hoary-throated Spinetail.

6 June 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has released the findings of the fifth edition of the Global Environmental Outlook (GEO-5) on the eve of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20). GEO-5 assessed 90 environmental goals and objectives, and found that significant progress has been made in only four.

May 2012: The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has released the report of the second Meeting of Europe Overseas Roundtable on Biodiversity and Climate Change. The meeting aimed to evaluate progress on biodiversity and climate change in the EU Outermost Regions (ORs) and Overseas Countries and Territories (OCTs) since the last meeting held in June/July 2011, plan for the work ahead in 2012, reflect on the theme of marine issues, and agree on a joint way forward to address biodiversity and climate change issues in Europe overseas.

May 2012: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has released the abstracts of posters presented during the 16th meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA 16) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and the fourth meeting of the Working Group on the Review of Implementation (WGRI 4). The theme of the poster session was "Oceans, Coasts, Islands: Achieving the Aichi Biodiversity Targets."
