UNEP/GRID-Arendal Newsletter Reports on GEF-Funded “Blue Forests” Project [viewed]

January 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP)/GRID-Arendal Marine Programme has released the January issue of its newsletter (Marine Newsletter #1), featuring articles on: the Global Environment Facility (GEF) funded demonstration project on the incorporation of carbon and other ecosystem services values into financial markets; the release of the State of the Mediterranean Marine and Coastal Environment Report; and the launch of the World Ocean Assessment website.

UNEP, Chinese Academy of Sciences Establish Global Center on Ecosystem Management [viewed]

UNEP1 February 2013: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) have signed an agreement to establish the International Ecosystem Management Partnership of UNEP (UNEP-IEMP), a global center located in Beijing and aimed at promoting ecosystem management in developing countries.

Event: Sixth International Ecosystem Services Partnership Conference [viewed]

The sixth meeting of the Ecosystem Services Partnership (ESP) will focus on case studies and the practical application of the ecosystem services concept to planning, management and decision-making. The ESP is organizing the conference, in cooperation with the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) and the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) Research Program on Forests, Trees and Agroforestry. Other partners include the UN Environment Programme's World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC), the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Global Mechanism (GM), and the Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB), among others. Professional Training Sessions on Practical Tools for Ecosystem Services Assessment will take place after the event.

Event: Semantics for Biodiversity – International Workshop [viewed]

This workshop, co-organized by Bioversity International, Institut de Recherche pour le Development (IRD), Centre de Recherche Agronomique pour le development (CIRAD), Institut de Biologie Computationelle (IBC) and Universite de Montpellier II, will define key challenges identified by the bioinformatics community, discuss solutions and identify opportunities emerging from interactions across plant science and informatics disciplines. A key focus of the workshop will be the use of semantic technologies to design and develop systems that support research on agricultural and wild biodiversity conservation and management for food security, including strategies for resilience to climate change pressure, ecosystem monitoring and territory mapping. The invitation to send pre-submissions for papers and abstracts is open until 24 February.

CMS Bulletin Highlights Progress on Conservation of Albatrosses, Petrels, Argali and Cross-River Gorilla [viewed]

January 2013: The December-January issue of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) Bulletin highlights recent progress, including that four of the five tuna Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (tRFMOS) have adopted seabird conservation measures that incorporate the Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels (ACAP)'s best practice advice for pelagic long line fisheries.

First IPBES Plenary Meeting Elects Chair, Addresses Organizational Issues [viewed]

ICRAF Publication Highlights Lessons Learned from PES Projects [viewed]

17 January 2013: The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) has released working paper no. 161, titled "Payments for ecosystem services schemes: project-level insights on benefits for ecosystems and the rural poor." The paper examines 36 payments for ecosystem services (PES) projects in which beneficiaries of ecosystem services make direct financial transfers to land owners and users in order to secure management practices that will conserve the identified services.
