7 March 2011: The sixth meeting of the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM), the Governing Body of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), will include a scientific session on emerging issues, focusing on pest risks associated with grains and wood.
4 March 2011: The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) has announced a regional partnership with the Government of Japan, focusing on the provision of technical support to the forestry sector in the Pacific.
3 March 2011: In celebrations for the ninth Africa Environment Day, the African Union (AU) Commission, in collaboration with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and local partners, highlighted the importance of sustainable forest management (SFM) for sustainable development and addressing climate change.
11 February 2011: The Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF), with the help of the Amazonas Sustainable Foundation (FAS), the Office National des Forêts International (ONFI) and a grant from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), organized a 10-day South-South exchange on community forestry and REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, including conservation, sustainable management of forests, and enhancement of carbon stocks).
The meeting will address possible reform of institutional arrangements under the Timber Committee of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the European Forestry Commission of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Additional topics will include: guidance of work areas, including markets and statistics; forest resources assessment; forest sector outlook studies; social and cultural aspects; policy and cross-sectoral issues; the status of the joint wood energy enquiry; and a roundtable on forest information challenges.
28 February 2011: The Senior Experts Group of the International Consortium on Combating Wildlife Crime (ICCWC) recently met in Vienna, Austria, to agree its programme of work for 2011.
24 February 2011: The International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) has released a call for proposals for its Thematic Programme on Reducing Deforestation and Forest Degradation and Enhancing Environmental Services (REDDES).
February 2011: The Growing Forest Partnership (GFP) has released the February issue of its newsletter. GFP is an initiative funded by the World Bank that supports local, national and international networks to ensure that global discussions about forests include the real and current challenges faced by forest-dependent people and local forest managers.
25 February 2011: In preparation for the sixth session of the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM 6), to be held from 14-18 March 2011, in Rome, Italy, the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) has released the tentative schedule of side events and the list of posters to be presented.
