UNDP Calls for Inputs on Draft Social and Environmental Standards [viewed]

UNDP3 March 2014: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) has announced an invitation to provide comments on its draft Social and Environmental Standards (SESs), which underpin UNDP's commitment to mainstreaming social and environmental sustainability in its programmes and projects. The Standards aim to: strengthen UNDP's social and environmental outcomes; minimize and manage adverse impacts when avoidance is not possible; and strengthen capacities for managing social and environmental risks.

Bioversity International Case Study Explores Community-Based Biodiversity Management in Nepal [viewed]

Bioversity International13 March 2014: Bioversity International has published a case study on community-based biodiversity management (CBM) for watershed restoration in the Kaski District of Nepal. The study reports lessons from Bioversity International's work with Local Initiatives for Biodiversity, Research and Development (LI-BIRD), alongside other national and international research organizations, to organize local groups in the region to develop and advance CBM activities, including participatory plant breeding, training workshops and community seedbanks.

Event: UNFF Special Events for the International Day of Forests 2014 [viewed]

The UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) Secretariat in the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) is organizing a series of activities at UN Headquarters in New York, US to celebrate the International Day of Forests 2014. The celebrations will feature a week-long series of film-screenings, a two-week exhibit of award-winning photographs and children's art and a special half-day event on 21 March, which will include a panel discussion on 'Women as agents of change for forests and sustainable development'. The special event will also screen award-winning short films that celebrate forests for people. The event will conclude with a general discussion. The Forest Film Festival screenings will run from 17-20 March 2014 and the MY FOREST, OUR FUTURE Art and Photo Exhibit will run from 17-28 March 2014.

OWG Co-Chairs Compile 19 'Focus Areas' [viewed]

owg21 February 2014: The Co-Chairs of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) Open Working Group (OWG) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have assembled a list of 19 'Focus Areas' for consideration by Member States as they seek to identify SDGs and accompanying targets. In a letter accompanying the Focus Areas, released on 21 February 2014, Macharia Kamau (Kenya) and Csaba Kőrösi (Hungary) write that further action in these areas is necessary to build "prosperous, peaceful and resilient societies that also protect the planet."

NGLS3 February 2013: Based on consultations with civil society, the UN Non-Governmental Liaison Service (UN-NGLS) has produced two papers to inform the eighth session of the UN General Assembly's (UNGA) Open Working Group (OWG) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The issue briefs highlight recommendations from civil society members on oceans and seas, and gender equality and women's human rights, topics for discussion at OWG 8.
