21 May 2012: Responding to the Aichi Target that calls for restoring at least 15% of the world's damaged ecosystems by 2020, adopted in the framework of the Strategic Plan 2011-2020 of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), botanic gardens around the world have formed the Ecological Restoration Alliance, which plans to restore 100 damaged, degraded or destroyed ecosystems.
Organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), in collaboration with the Government of Thailand, this workshop aims to build capacity to address invasive alien species (IAS) and to support implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020, including the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, in order to integrate activities related to the Global Taxonomy Initiative (GTI), as needed, into national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs) in East and South East Asia.
20 May 2012: Delegates at the fifth Meeting of the Parties (MOP 5) to the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) discussed, among other things: implementation of the Agreement and Action Plan; international reviews; the International Implementation Tasks 2009-2016; the African-Eurasian Flyways Global Environment Facility (GEF) Project; and implementation and revision of the communication strategy.
May 2012: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has released the abstracts of posters presented during the 16th meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA 16) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and the fourth meeting of the Working Group on the Review of Implementation (WGRI 4). The theme of the poster session was "Oceans, Coasts, Islands: Achieving the Aichi Biodiversity Targets."
26 April 2012: A meeting of sub-national governments in support of the Aichi biodiversity targets aimed to identify and disseminate best practices and promote decentralized cooperation on biodiversity.
May 2012: The sixth issue of the Convention on Biological Diversity's (CBD) newsletter for civil society, [square brackets], has been made available online. The newsletter includes an interview with CBD Executive Secretary Braulio Dias reflecting his focus on implementation, and civil society views on market-based mechanisms for biodiversity conservation.
1 May 2012: The 16th session of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) opened on 30 April 2012, in Montreal, Canada. The session is focused on issues relating to marine and coastal biodiversity, and biodiversity and climate change.
April 2012: The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Secretariat for the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) recently convened a workshop on the interlinkages between human health and biodiversity.
24 April 2012: The second session of a plenary meeting on the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) ended with the adoption of a resolution establishing the IPBES, following seven years of discussion. It also selected Bonn, Germany, as the physical location of the Platform's Secretariat. Other modalities and institutional arrangements also were considered.
8 April 2012: The Quito Seminar on Scaling Up Biodiversity Finance addressed the issue of innovative financial mechanisms within the broader context of scaled up biodiversity financing, as an attempt to facilitate the formal negotiations towards and during the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
