CBD COP 11 Opens with Focus on Strategic Plan Implementation, Climate and Marine Issues [viewed]

8 October 2012: The 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) opened on 8 October 2012, in Hyderabad, India, directly following the sixth Meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. The two-week meeting will address a series of cross-cutting and ecosystem-related issues, as well as financial, administrative and implementation-related topics.

CBD Technical Study Focuses on ICCAs [viewed]

CBDSeptember 2012: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has released a report highlighting the values and benefits of indigenous peoples' and local communities' conserved territories and areas (ICCAs). It stresses that formal recognition of ICCAs should be appropriate to the local situation and adequate to local requirements.

Event: CBD Colloquium on the Role of ICCAs in Achieving the Aichi Targets [viewed]

In an effort to support implementation of a series of articles of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and decisions of the Conference of the Parties (COP), a one-day Colloquium on the role of indigenous peoples' and local communities' conserved territories and areas (ICCAs) in achieving the Aichi Targets will be co-hosted by the CBD Secretariat, the Governments of Brazil, India, Mexico, the Philippines, Senegal and South Africa, the ICCA Consortium, the International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity and Conservation International. It will comprise a series of regional roundtable discussions.

GEF, FAO Support Transboundary Protected Areas in Ghana and Ivory Coast [viewed]

GEF10 September 2012: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) is providing support for a project, implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), to implement a transboundary management agreement for the long-term sustainable management of protected areas and their buffer zones in the Bia-Diambarakro area, at the frontier between Ghana and Cote D'Ivoire.

IUCN World Conservation Congress Adopts Jeju Declaration, Elects New President [viewed]

15 September 2012: The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Conservation Congress elected Zhang Xinsheng of China as the new President of IUCN, during the Congress held in Jeju, Republic of Korea. Before closing, the 2012 Congress also approved the IUCN Programme for 2013-2016, adopted several other motions, and adopted the Jeju Declaration on "nature-based solutions."

ASEAN and India Ministers Issue Statement Ahead of CBD COP 11 [viewed]

13 September 2012: Environment ministers from Member States of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and India held a meeting on 7 September 2012, in New Delhi, India, and adopted the "New Delhi ASEAN-India Ministerial Statement on Biodiversity." The statement has been circulated as an information document in preparation for the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

Event: Summit on Island Innovations: Celebrating Bright Spots, Leadership and Successes in Island Conservation and Sustainable Livelihoods [viewed]

This island summit will be held on the margins of the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), in close collaboration with Grenada, Palau and Seychelles as co-chairs of the Global Island Partnership (GLISPA) and with financial support from Japan. The event will focus on implementation of the CBD programme of work on island biodiversity (PoWIB) and achieving the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, and will provide a platform to mobilize support for further actions to promote the conservation and sustainable use of island biodiversity.

IPBES-1 Provisional Agenda Announced [viewed]

13 September 2012: The provisional agenda has been circulated for the first plenary meeting of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES-1). IPBES-1 will be hosted by the Government of Germany, and take place in Bonn, Germany, from 21-26 January 2013. Regional and stakeholder consultations will take place on 20 January 2013.

LMMA Network Gathers at World Conservation Congress [viewed]

10 September 2012: A workshop held on 10 September 2012, in Jeju, Republic of Korea, addressed cost-effective ways to tackle challenges in community marine conservation. The event was convened the sidelines of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Conservation Congress, by the UN Environmental Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC), Blue Ventures, CORDIO and the Locally Managed Marine Areas (LMMA) Network.
